Mountain Hawks Sweep Saturday Doubleheader From Bucknell

4/1/2023 6:04:00 PM | Softball

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh opened its first home Patriot League series of 2023 by sweeping a doubleheader from Bucknell Saturday at Leadership Park. The Mountain Hawks won game one 6-2 and game two 5-1 to extend their winning streak to nine straight.

Graduate student Carley Barjaktarovich and senior Emily Cimino both had four hits to lead Lehigh and first-year Chloe Hess carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning in game two. Lehigh is now 26-6 overall and 5-0 in the league, while Bucknell falls to 9-19 overall and 1-4 in the league.

Lehigh took a 2-0 lead in the second inning of game one on RBI doubles by first-year Sydney Parlett and sophomore Maddy Schmeiser. A three-run third inning extended Lehigh's lead to 5-0. Cimino drove in first-year Lily Owens with a double to left field. Senior Josie Charles brought home a run with a sacrifice fly and junior Amanda Greaney plated Cimino with a squeeze bunt.

Cimino scored Lehigh's sixth run in the fourth inning, scoring from third on a throwing error on a stolen base by Barjaktarovich.

Bucknell pulled two runs back on a Zoie Smith RBI single and a bases loaded walk to Noelle Gardon in the fifth inning, but junior Katelyn Young battled back to retire the final seven batters she faced.

Young picked up her 13th win of the season, allowing two runs on four hits with six strikeouts and six walks.

Barjaktarovich was 3-for-4 in the opener, while Cimino and Schmeiser both added two hits.

In game two Lehigh and Bucknell were scoreless through three innings. Cimino singled leading off the fourth and scored the first run of the game when Charles doubled off the glove of Gardon.

Cimino came up with the based loaded in the fifth and brought in a run with a fielder's choice, allowing Schmesier to score from third.

The Mountain Hawks tacked on three runs in the fifth after a Bucknell throwing error, a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly to left by Schmeiser.

Hess held the Bison without a hit through six innings before Smith led off the seventh with a single to shortstop. Smith came around to score Bucknell's lone run on a throwing error before Hess struck out the final two batters to end the game.

Hess improved to 9-2, allowing an unearned run on one hit with six strikeouts and three walks.

Cimino and Parlett had two hits apiece to lead Lehigh in the nightcap.

The Mountain Hawks and Bison will wrap-up their series with a single game Sunday at noon.
