Owens Earns Second Rookie of the Week Award This Season

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh first-year Lily Owens has been named Patriot League Rookie of the Week, the league announced Tuesday. This is the second Rookie of the Week award this season for Owens, who led the Mountain Hawks at the plate during a 5-0 showing over the weekend at Campbell's Camel Invitational.

Owens went 7-for-15 at the plate in five games last week for a .467 batting average. She had a double, two home runs, four RBIs and six runs scored over the five games and added two stolen bases for the Mountain Hawks. Owens went 3-for-3 in Lehigh's tournament-opening win over Furman on Friday. In Lehigh's next game against Campbell, Owens homered in the top of the first inning to stake the Mountain Hawks to a 1-0 lead.

On Saturday, Owens added an RBI single as part of a seven-run eighth inning in the Mountain Hawks' 11-4 win over North Carolina Central. Owens capped the weekend by going 2-for-2 with a home run and three runs scored in Lehigh's 9-1 win over Canisius.

For the season, the Chino Hills, Calif., native is batting .325 with two home runs and five RBIs. Owens is tied for the team lead with eight stolen bases and second on the Mountain Hawks with 12 runs scored.

Junior pitcher Katelyn Young garnered honorable mention recognition from the league on Tuesday. Young defeated Canisius twice at the Camel Invitational, highlighted by a two-hit shutout on Saturday where she struck out 11 in Lehigh's 3-0 victory. She is now 5-0 on the season with a 1.75 ERA.

The Mountain Hawks are riding a six-game winning streak and stand at 10-2 on the season. Lehigh will begin spring break with seven games over five days at the Spring Games in Madeira Beach, Fla. The Mountain Hawks will open their trip with games against South Alabama (9 a.m.) and Iowa (2 p.m.) on Saturday.
