Mountain Hawks Fall to Marist, No. 9/11 Texas Saturday in Tampa

3/18/2023 5:15:00 PM | Softball

TAMPA, Fla. – The Lehigh softball team dropped a pair of games Saturday at the South Florida Showdown. The Mountain Hawks couldn't hold on to a late 4-3 lead as Marist rallied for a 5-4 victory in Lehigh's first game of the day. Lehigh then ran into No. 9/11 Texas. The Mountain Hawks failed to capitalize on several early chances and the Longhorns used a six-run third inning to claim a 7-0 win.

Lehigh is facing its first losing streak of the season after dropping three consecutive games. The Mountain Hawks are now 17-6.

First-year Lily Owens went 2-for-3 against Marist, including a two-run home run, while classmate Sydney Parlett had two of Lehigh's six hits against Texas.

Senior Josie Charles helped Lehigh start fast against Marist (8-17) with a first-inning RBI single that scored Owens. Charles and senior Emily Cimino then executed a double steal with Cimino scoring Lehigh's second run of the first inning.

Hailey Ahr's RBI double in the bottom of the first brought Marist within 2-1.

In the fifth, Owens drilled a two-run home run to right center, her fifth of the season, to extend the Lehigh lead to 4-1.

Marist's Alyssa Grupp singled home two runs in the third inning to bring the Red Foxes back within 4-3. Hanna Brock then put Marist in front with a two-run double in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Sophomore Maddy Schmeiser doubled with two outs in the seventh but was stranded on second base as the tying run.

Junior Ansley Dambach started in the circle for Lehigh and allowed three runs on five hits over four innings with two walks and two strikeouts. Classmate Katelyn Young took the loss allowing two runs on three hits in two innings of relief.

The Mountain Hawks had early opportunities against the defending national runner-up Longhorns. Lehigh had six hits and left 10 runners on base, including seven in the first three innings. The Mountain Hawks left the bases loaded in the first and third frames.

Viviana Martinez put Texas (24-5-1) on the board with a first inning sacrifice fly and jumpstarted the six-run third with a two-run single. Katie Cimusz added a two-run double for Texas, while Lou Gilbert and Leighann Goode also drove in runs.

Parlett's two hits included a double and Cimino added a double for the Mountian Hawks.

First-year Chloe Hess started in the circle and allowed four runs on five hits in five innings with five walks and two strikeouts. Sophomore Maria Urban was charged with three runs in an inning of work.

Citlaly Gutierrez and Mac Morgan combined on the shutout for Texas.

Lehigh will close out the South Florida Showdown and its spring break trip to Florida on Sunday when the Mountain Hawks face Marist at 10 a.m.
