ANNAPOLIS, Md. — The Lehigh men's track and field team finished fourth in the 2023 Patriot League Indoor Track and Field Championships, highlighted by multiple Mountain Hawks coming away with medals.
Â
Navy totaled 256 points to win its third straight Patriot League Championship, while Boston University finished second with 137 points. Army West Point (132.5), the Mountain Hawks (61) and Bucknell (51.5) round out the top five. American (27), Holy Cross (18), Colgate (13) and Lafayette (5) completed the men's standings.
"The best part of a championship meet is measuring up against the best," stated head men's track and field coach, Todd Etters. "Navy continues to be a very impressive squad and I congratulate them on winning. We had stand-out performances all weekend and they were highlighted by Ian Scott and Kerem Ayhan."
Senior Ian Scott scored 10 points by capturing the Patriot League title in the triple jump with a mark of 14.86 meters, which ranks third all-time in program history.
Â
"Ian showed something special leading into the championship and we expected him to win," added Etters. "He didn't shy away from that pressure and he was at his best. The entire triple jump squad did a great job of feeding off of each other and they helped to push us over Bucknell in the team race."
Senior Kerem Ayhan finished in second place in the 800-meter race in a time of 1:52.37, which is good enough for third all-time, and earned the Mountain Hawks eight points.
Â
"Kerem made the podium last spring in the 800 and he was determined to get back to that level. Simply put, he wasn't going to be denied. I am fortunate enough to see his dedication and toughness daily, so it was no surprise to me that he stepped up and got it done," continued Etters.
The 4x400-meter relay team of Patrez Thomas, Joseph Cranley, Ethan Hood and Amondo Lemmon placed fifth which earned four points.
Sophomores Kevin Harvey and Aidan Lynch competed in the 3,000-meter race and picked up a total of eight points for Lehigh. Harvey took fourth in a time of 8:21.29 while Lynch placed sixth in a time of 8:24.01.
"The men's 3k was a really interesting event, commented Etters. "It was run in two sections with the top seeds in the second section. The first section is generally referred to as the slow section, but it was hardly that. Half the scorers came out of the first section, including Kevin. That just shows that if you compete hard good things will happen. Aidan was just as impressive in the second section and we picked up some crucial points at a crucial time in that event."
Â
Sophomore Skyler Mott and senior Brittann Pierce both recorded points for Lehigh in the high jump. Mott cleared 2.02 meters to finish sixth while Pierce tied for seventh at a mark of 1.97 meters.
"High jump was the first event to finish on Sunday," noted Etters. "There is a lot of drama in that event because one jump can move you from 8th place to first place. Skylar was so close to making the podium and Brittan had the best competition of his Lehigh career. "Â
Junior Daniel Stipanov ran in the finals of the 60-meter hurdles and completed the event in 8.39 seconds, finishing seventh and garnering two points.
In the shot put, sophomore Liam Lovering and junior Alex Clevenger both captured points for the Mountain Hawks. Lovering threw a mark of 15.99 meters, which was good enough for sixth place and three points while Clevenger registered a mark 15.89 meters for two points and finished seventh. Sophomore Aidan Lynch earned three points for a sixth-place finish in the 3,000-meter race.
Etters commented, "Our throwers had a really strong season and they face the challenge of going against one of the stronger parts of our league. They weren't happy with how Saturday went, but they stepped up as a group on Sunday. Liam and Alex are strong young competitors that thrive in a challenging environment."
Ayhan and seniors Brandtson Duffie, Thomas Leitner and Jacob Martinez completed the distance medley relay in 10:12.75, which earned the squad an eighth-place finish and good for one point.
The Mountain Hawks had one Patriot League First-Team honoree with Ian Scott winning the triple jump with the third-longest mark in program history while Kerem Ayhan earned a spot on the Patriot League Second Team with his performance in the 800-meter run.
"The great part about a track and field meet is that there are multiple events going on at once. There was about a 90-minute stretch on Sunday where we scored the majority of our points. That is exciting and our team really did a great job of feeding off of each other.
"Overall, I am thankful for all the work our entire coaching staff put into the indoor season. However, the credit really goes to our student-athletes for all that they do. This meet was a dogfight the entire way and there were no easy points to be had. Everything we got we had to fight for and I loved seeing how we ran toward that challenge," concluded Etters.
The Mountain Hawks will prepare for the ECAC Championship, which will be held in Boston, Mass. on March 3-5.Â
