BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Following a 3-0 start that included the first top 10 win in program history, the Lehigh softball team swept the season's first Patriot League weekly awards, announced Tuesday. Senior Emily Cimino was named Player of the Week, junior Katelyn Young garnered Pitcher of the Week honors and first-year Lily Owens was recognized as the Rookie of the Week.
The Mountain Hawks' season-opening trip to Alabama's Leadoff Classic was highlighted by a 7-4 victory over then-No. 7/9 Alabama Friday evening, the program's first-ever victory over a top 10-ranked team. Lehigh also defeated Georgia Southern twice, coming from behind in the late innings to win both games.
Cimino provided late-inning heroics in two of the three games last weekend, going 4-for-11 overall with four extra-base hits and seven RBIs. Five of the RBIs came against Alabama, where she went 3-for-4. Cimino blasted a two-run home run to straightaway center field in the fifth inning to tie the game at 4-4 and later laced a three-run bases-clearing double off All-American Montana Fouts to give Lehigh a 7-4 lead in the seventh inning. The next day, Cimino delivered a game-winning two-run double in a 4-3 victory over Georgia Southern.
Young earned the victory in the circle against the Crimson Tide, scattering 10 hits while allowing four runs. After Alabama jumped to a 2-0 lead in the first inning, Young retired the next nine Crimson Tide hitters, allowing Lehigh's offense to pull even at 2-2. In the tournament finale against Georgia Southern, Young threw 6.2 strong innings, allowing one earned run on just three hits with six strikeouts.
One of several first-year Mountain Hawks who enjoyed strong starts to their college careers, Owens went 5-for-11 at the plate with three runs scored. Her five hits tied for the team lead, while Owens also led Lehigh going 4-for-4 in stolen base attempts. Owens hit safely in all three games. She scored the tying run and singled home an insurance run in Lehigh's season-opening 4-2 win over Georgia Southern. Owens started all three games at second base and batted second for the Mountain Hawks in her debut weekend.
Lehigh will head to southeast Virginia this weekend for the HU/NSU Tour Classic, co-hosted by Hampton and Norfolk State Feb. 17-19. The Mountain Hawks will play five games over three days beginning with contests against Georgetown and UMass-Lowell on Friday.
