LEWISBURG, Pa. – After picking up a massive 3-0 win over rival Lafayette on Friday, Lehigh volleyball traveled west to take on the Bucknell Bison in their second to last match of the regular season. The Mountain Hawks fell to the Bison in four sets but still control their own destiny on their pursuit of a Patriot League tournament berth.
Lehigh (13-13, 5-10 PL) started the afternoon off on the right foot, defeating Bucknell (15-9, 11-4 PL) in the match's opening set 25-17. After Bucknell earned the first point of the day on a service ace, Lehigh uncorked a 10-2 run that includes several aces, kills and Bison attacking errors. Although Bucknell was able to slightly narrow the gap, Lehigh's lead had become too large, and Madison McCartney's kill sealed the deal for the Mountain Hawks.
Bucknell, who currently sits tied for second place in the league, proved why they have been one of the top teams this season in the second and third sets. The Bison earned wins by scores of 25-14 in the second and 25-20 in the third and recorded 25 kills to Lehigh's 17 in the two periods.
With their backs against the wall, Lehigh left it all on the line in the fourth and final set of Sunday's match. Although the Mountain Hawks lost the set, the put up an admirable effort, losing to Bucknell 25-23. Lehigh held a 23-22 late in the frame, but two errors and a kill by Allie Lopez gave the Bison the win.
Lehigh sits in sixth place in the Patriot League standings following the loss, as both Lafayette and Loyola also suffered defeats on Sunday. All three teams will enter the upcoming week with a chance to clinch the final spot in the Patriot League tournament.
Junior Megan Schulte led Lehigh with 15 kills, her eighth match with 15+ kills this season. Junior Makena Smith tallied 26 assists, junior Kyleigh Brown recorded 27 digs and both junior Emily Stewart and sophomore Madison McCartney led the Mountain Hawks with four blocks each.
Lehigh's final regular season match of the season will take place on Thursday, November 9 at Navy. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. from Annapolis.
"We have put ourselves in a position that is tough," said head coach Alexa Keckler. "Thursday is big. This team has the talent and heart to do it. We have been competing in every set we play and on Thursday it will have to be the same. Executing the game plan and finishing. We must finish."
