ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Lehigh volleyball concluded its regular season schedule Thursday night with a match against the Navy Midshipmen in Annapolis. The Mountain Hawks battled through four very competitive sets against Navy, but ultimately the Midshipmen came away with the win.
"It was a hard-fought battle," said head coach Alexa Keckler. "I'm proud of the fight our girls showed. They never gave up."
Lehigh (13-14, 5-11 PL) entered Thursday night's affair in sixth place with a chance to control their own destiny while Navy (16-8, 8-7 PL) sat locked in fifth place in the Patriot League standings prior to first serve. The Mountain Hawks played Navy to a five-set victory earlier in the season, and the opening set provided plenty of fireworks to start things off. The two teams battled to extra points in the opening frame and put on quite a show for those in attendance. Unfortunately for the Mountain Hawks, the exciting opening set finished in favor of the Midshipmen 30-28.
The next set was once again dead even between the two teams, as neither side gained more than a two-point advantage up until the halfway point. Navy jumped ahead to an 18-14 lead after a 4-0 run, but Lehigh responded in kind to tie the match at 20 apiece. Despite going ahead 21-20 late in the set, the Midshipmen closed out the second on a 5-1 run to go up 2-0 against Lehigh.
With their backs to the wall, Lehigh needed to pull out a win in set three to keep their chances alive. The Mountain Hawks did just that, as an early 14-9 advantage helped Lehigh take control of set three. Although a late run by Navy nearly tied the set, the Mountain Hawks closed out on a 5-2 run to win 25-21 in set three. Unfortunately for Lehigh, their comeback effort would run out in the fourth, as the Midshipmen capitalized on an early lead to win the fourth set 25-16.
Junior Megan Schulte impressed in the regular season finale, registering 18 kills and 12 digs on the night. First-year Alysia Fingall and junior Emily Stewart also tallied double-digit kills, scoring 11 and 10 respectively. Junior Makena Smith assisted on 43 points, her fourth such game with 40+ assists this season. Fingall led the Mountain Hawks with 19 digs while sophomore Madison McCartney's five total blocks led Lehigh.
The Mountain Hawks can still clinch a spot in this month's Patriot League tournament with losses from both Lafayette and Loyola on Saturday. However, if one of those teams were to win, Lehigh would be eliminated from postseason contention.
