Lehigh Falls On The Road To Army 3-1

10/8/2023 7:12:00 PM | Volleyball

WEST POINT, N.Y. – Lehigh volleyball went back on the road Sunday afternoon to face the Army West Point Black Knights in the two teams' first meeting of the season. The Mountain Hawks were defeated by the Black Knights in four sets.

Lehigh (10-9, 2-6 PL) picked up right where they left off following Friday's thrilling win over Navy, jumping ahead to an early 8-2 lead. The Mountain Hawks were able to maintain their lead up to the midway point of the period, extending the margin to seven at 14-7. However, Army West Point (10-7, 7-1) slowly but surely began to bring themselves back into the match, eventually tying the set at 18 apiece. Although the Mountain Hawks kept themselves in it, Army rode their newfound momentum to a 25-23 first set win.

The back-and-forth nature of the match continued into the second, as both teams held leads through the first half of play. The score was tied at 15 all halfway through the frame, and neither Lehigh nor Army seemed to be able to truly take control. The teams traded points until the Mountain Hawks scored three unanswered to go up 23-20. Kills from Alysia Fingall and Megan Schulte sealed the deal in Lehigh's 25-22 set two win.

Although the opening two sets were quite competitive, the second-ranked team in the Patriot League got back on track in the final two frames. Lehigh hung close with Army for the majority of the third, but the Black Knights uncorked two big runs to win 25-18. Lehigh found themselves trailing early into the fourth set and were unable to complete the comeback, culminating in a 25-16 win and 3-1 match victory for Army.

"We laid off the gas on sets three and four and Army came out being much more aggressive," said head coach Alexa Keckler.

Junior Megan Schulte's 16 kills led both teams today while junior Emily Stewart added 12 of her own. Junior Makena Smith continued to facilitate well, adding a team-high 39 assists. Junior Kyleigh Brown added a team-best 17 digs while Stewart's five blocks led the Mountain Hawks.

Lehigh will play host to Army in their next outing on Saturday, October 14. First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m. from Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall.

"We have one team to prepare for next weekend and a lot of film to dissect," said Keckler on facing the Black Knights in back-to-back matches.
