NEWARK, Del. - Down 2-0 with 26 minutes remaining, Lehigh men's soccer battled back, scoring two goals to come away with a 2-2 draw to Delaware Tuesday night in Newark.Â
"I think it's a really important stepping stone for this team, " said head coach Dean Koski. "Any time you're down 2-0 on the road against anybody in Division I soccer, it's really hard to come back from that, and in particular because they're really tired. We're really thin on the bench right now with injuries. We've asked guys to step up."Â
The Mountain Hawks moved to 2-6-3, while the Blue Hens moved to 6-2-3.Â
.Â
Delaware found the back of the net early on, scoring just 14 minutes into the game. Richard Monath grabbed a loose ball and was able to corral it and put it in for a goal.
Monath's shot was just one of three shots Lehigh's defense allowed in the first half. The Blue Hens went into halftime with a 1-0 lead.Â
Delaware went up 2-0 in the 59th minute after Justin Ruth netted the ball into the box, and Ethan Williams headed it in.Â
While it looked like the Blue Hens were going to roll to the win, the Mountain Hawks stood strong and were relentless.Â
Lehigh got on the board in the 64th minute after Delaware goalkeeper Caelin Campbell went to kick the ball, and Austen Carranza intercepted it and was able to put it right past Campbell. Carranza's goal was also his first collegiate goal.
Lehigh was able to find the equalizer in the 88th minute after Tommy Zipprich found Connor Kuenstle right outside the edge of the box and Kuenstle slid it past a couple of Delaware defenders. Kuenstle, who scored his first collegiate goal on Tuesday, was also playing in his first collegiate game.Â
"This is Connor's first minutes of the year, and he scores the game-tying goal,"Koski said. "Look, we're going pretty deep on the bench, but I really appreciate that the guys continue to compete. That's a really important sign for this team because if we can continue with that kind of character, we will win some games in the Patriot League, and we should be able to make the Patriot League Tournament, but we can't let 45 minutes go by and spot teams two goals, and that's where we have to figure things out."
Sophomore goalkeeper Tommy Chyzowych earned the start in net for Lehigh, making seven saves. Campbell made one save for the Blue Hens.Â
"Tommy had a really good game for us and kept us in the game," Koski said. "I think his performance and saves inspired our guys to say, ' man, he's bringing it. We have to do more and help him."
Delaware outshot Lehigh 14-4.
After what was a three-game road swing for Lehigh, the Mountain Hawks will finally return home on Saturday when they host Army West Point at 6 p.m.Â
