PHILADELPHIA - Lehigh men's soccer suffered a 5-0 loss to Penn Tuesday evening at Penn Park in the non-league finale.Â
"We're pretty disappointed - players and coaches with the performance tonight," said head coach Dean Koski. "It's not a typical Lehigh defensive effort. Anytime you give up that many goals, you have some pretty serious defensive issues, but I would say we as coaches really set the team up for failure because we were looking ahead to American, and I don't think we had the team in the best frame of mind an important non-league game against a good team."
The Mountain Hawks dropped to 2-8-5, while the Quakers jumped to 3-3-5.Â
"The result certainly reflected on our readiness to come out and compete, so as coaches, and certainly I take responsibility, I think we just got it wrong in how we prepared them for this match," Koski said.Â
Penn scored just 18 minutes into the game after Michael teDutis was driving down the left side of the box and was able to move past a couple of Lehigh defenders and kick it right past reigning Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Week Blake Koski.Â
While Penn had just one goal heading into halftime, the Quakers exploded in the second half, scoring four goals.Â
"We were pretty loose defensively but wanted to change the game up a little, so we pressured some more, and I don't think that really suits us right now," Koski said. "When things get stretched out, and we're not cohesive, it makes it harder on us."
Brandon Curran found an insurance goal in the 53rd minute.Â
In the 68th minute, Penn found another goal after Stas Korzeniowski found an open Michael Hewes.
Penn's Gavin Selee found the top right of the goal in the 78th minute to make it 4-0 for Penn.Â
The Quakers scored the fifth and final goal of the day in the 88th minute after Mateo Zazueta was being pressed by Lehigh, but Zazueta just slid it past the backline.
All five of Penn's goals were scored by five different players.
While Koski had a solid day in net for Lehigh, making a career-high of nine saves, the Quakers outshot the Mountain Hawks 22-2. Penn's Nick Christoffersen did not have to make any saves.Â
Penn had nine corner kicks, while Lehigh had one.
The Mountain Hawks had just one shot in each half. Trey Sheeler and Perry Kingson were the only Lehigh players to record a shot.
The Mountain Hawks will look to bounce back when they take on American on Saturday at 1 p.m. in Washington, D.C.Â
