Rowing Opens Fall Campaign At The Head Of The Passaic

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Both the Lehigh men's and women's rowing teams will open the 2023-24 campaign this weekend at the Head of the Passaic in Rutherford, N.J. on Sunday. The event will mark the beginning of Steven J. '69 and Karen A. Lee Head Rowing Coach Peter Costas' second season at the helm of the program.
Sunday's race will be the first of four races for the women and first of five for the men this fall. The men will race in Piscataway, N.J. against Rutgers next weekend before both teams participate in the Lehigh Class Day Races on October 28.
"I'm hoping to see the focus and aggression we've seen at practice translate to an unfamiliar and competitive environment," said Costas ahead of Sunday's races. "We've been successful in finding technical and physical development with internal competition on our home water, and we'll look to that experience in providing some confidence for the first race of the year."
The Mountain Hawks will have a plethora of athletes competing this weekend, including four entries from the women's side and two entries from the men's team.
"For the women's team, we'll have two entries each in the Women's Collegiate 8+ and Women's Collegiate 4+. On the men's side, we'll be racing two entries in the Men's Collegiate 8+," said Costas. "It's exciting to see the growth in depth on the team and the opportunity to travel with a large group."
A season ago, the men's team captured their first Middle Atlantic Regional Conference Championship, placing high expectations on this year's squad. Despite losing some key starters, Costas believes that his team has been preparing well for the season in their absence.
"We have the target on our back of defending the MARC title in the 1v8+ for the first time, and the responsibility to replace six of the nine spots in the lineup from last spring," said Costas. "The team has been stepping up to the challenge to this point, and will follow a pair of Chicagoans in stern pair, freshman Andrew Lundgren and sophomore Zachary Wexler, in the 1v8+. Lots of power and fearlessness in our 2v8+, I'm excited at what we've seen from them at practice so far."
The women's team looks to continue to make strides under Costas' leadership in year two. He has been impressed with what he's seen from Lehigh's returners and the team's large first-year class.
"We'll rely on the experience of Julia McDougall, Catherine Hilow, and Mina Petrovic as the three returners from the front of the boat to keep the momentum we were building last spring," said Costas.
"We're happy with what we've seen so far from a talented class of 11 freshmen, including Hannah Vogel and Jordan Roth who will race in the 1v8+ this weekend. I'd expect to see that full group continue to make strides throughout the year and be a central part of our goal to find new speed."
