BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh men's cross country team competed at the 48th annual Paul Short Run on Friday morning, finishing 41st in the Gold 8k race. North Carolina won the Gold 8k race for the second year in a row, with two sophomores securing the top two finishing spots for the Tar Heels.Â
The Mountain Hawks top finisher for the race was senior Connor Melko who placed 138th overall. Melko's time of 24:21.5 earned him the fourth best overall course finish for a Lehigh runner. Melko finished as the top student-athlete for Lehigh for the second year in a row at the Paul Short Run.Â
Melko was followed by classmate Tyler French, who finished 156th (24:27.8) and graduate student Nick Wilson who finished in 376th (26:01.2). Following close behind were seniors Ethan Davis (26:03.3) and Riley Williamson (26:16.1) who finished 379th and 391st, respectively.Â
"I thought Connor did the right thing, he was aggressive today," said head coach Todd Etters. "It would have been nice to see him and Tyler connect a little bit better throughout the whole race. They were separated by a little bit and I think they run better together, but the competition is awesome."Â
The Mountain Hawks finished the race with 1195 points overall. There were a total of 46 teams competing in the Gold 8k race.
"We're out here training three days a week and there's nobody out here," said Etters. "You come to a day like today and there's literally thousands of people running around and that's an adjustment."
The top runners for Lehigh in the open 8K were first-years Carter Lopresti in 195th place (26:10.9) and Alex Heidemann coming in 205th (26:16.5).Â
"It's not often you race in a field this large and this deep, so I think we'll handle it better with our freshman when they see what that competition is and know what the objective is," said Etters. "It's something we can learn from. I'm excited about the group that we have, but they have to learn from today and do better and they will."
The Mountain Hawks will take a week off from competition before heading to two meets on Friday, Oct. 14. While some members of the Lehigh men's cross country team will travel to University Park, Pa. for the Penn State Invitational, others will head to New York City for the ECAC/IC4A Championships. Competition at Penn State will begin at 11:30 a.m. while the ECAC/IC4A will begin at 11:45 a.m.Â
