BETHLEHEM, Pa. - An Army West Point goal within the first six minutes was enough for the Black Knights to defeat the Lehigh women's soccer team in its Patriot League season opener in West Point, N.Y. on Friday night. The Mountain Hawks battled throughout the entire 90 minutes of play but were unable to come back from the 1-0 deficit.
"Not the result we wanted," said head coach Lauren Calabrese. "Army battled and was able to secure a well-earned win. We will continue to stay the course and believe in our process as a team."
The Mountain Hawks opened up the game with two corner kicks in the first two minutes but were unable to get a shot off. In the sixth minute, Army's Kaitlin Palain found the back of the net off of an assist from Keira Vesy.
Lehigh goalkeeper Maggie Ousouljoglou got a hand on the ball but was unable to make the stop, giving the Black Knights the 1-0 lead.
The Mountain Hawks put up five shots in the first half but the Army defense showed no signs of giving up the 1-0 lead.
Coming out of halftime, the Black Knights' defense showed no signs of letting up. Throughout the final 45 minutes of the game, Lehigh put up five more shots.
Junior Alex Odle had the opportunity to tie the game at 1-1 in the 70th minute. Army goalkeeper Sage Stroham made the save to hold on to the 1-0 lead for the Black Knights.
Just four minutes later, junior Ava Schaller put up another shot on goal for Lehigh. Stroham made the save that ultimately secured the 1-0 victory for Army.
Army led Lehigh in shots 12-10 following 90 minutes of play in West Point on Friday night. Ousouljoglou led with five saves compared to Stroham's two.
The Mountain Hawks will return to Bethlehem to prepare for their second league game of the season. Lehigh will host Lafayette on Wednesday, Sept. 21 in the Rivalry presented by Lehigh Valley Orthopedic Institute, part of Lehigh Valley Health Network. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. and will be streamed on ESPN+.
