8/24/2022 5:43:00 PM | Field Hockey

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Looking to build on the successes of its best season since 1994, the Lehigh field hockey team opens its 2022 campaign with two games this weekend. The Mountain Hawks will host Lock Haven Friday at 6 p.m. on Ronald J. Ulrich Field before traveling to face Temple Sunday at noon. Both games will be broadcast on ESPN+.

The Mountain Hawks are coming off an 11-7 campaign in 2021, a season in which Lehigh reached the Patriot League Tournament for the first time in a decade, Lehigh posted its most wins and its first overall winning campaign since the 1994 Patriot League championship season.

Senior Sarah Bonthuis (11 G, 5 A, 27 P) is the top returning scorer and the lone returnee among Lehigh's four All-Patriot League performers from a season ago. Joining Bonthuis are senior Sydney White, juniors Abbie Brown and Julia Gatelein and sophomore Guusje Hogendoorn, all of who started 17 or more contests a season ago. In the back, senior Maddie Kahn returns after starting all 18 games in the cage in 2021. Kahn was the Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Year in the spring 2021 season and had a 1.77 goals against average and .698 save percentage last fall.

Lock Haven comes into Friday's season-opener coming off of a 5-9 campaign in 2021. The Bald Eagles were picked sixth out of eight teams in the Atlantic 10 preseason poll. Top returners for Lock Haven included Martina Spangenberg, an All-Atlantic 10 and NFHCA All-Region performer a season ago, and former A-10 Rookie of the Year Jazmin Palma.

Lehigh and Lock Haven last met in 2019 with the Bald Eagles winning 4-1. The Mountain Hawks' lone win against Lock Haven came by a 2-1 score in 2013.

Temple went 8-11 in 2021 and will open its season Friday at Lafayette before Lehigh visits Howarth Field on Sunday. The Owls were picked fourth in the Big East preseason poll, with Julianne Kopec and Nienke Oerlemans tabbed for the preseason all-conference team.

The Owls lead the all-time series against Lehigh 14-6-3, but the Mountain Hawks won the most recent meeting 2-1 last October in Bethlehem. Erica Steele and Lenke Havas scored the Lehigh goals in the Mountain Hawks' first win over Temple since 2003.

Following this weekend's action, Lehigh will head west for two games next weekend. The Mountain Hawks will play at Ball State, Sept. 3 at noon and then will travel to Ohio State the following day for a noon start.
