BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Senior midfielder Michael Tahiru made history on Monday afternoon, becoming the first men's soccer student athlete to rack up three University Awards at the annual Convocation, held at Zoellner Arts Center.
Tahiru received the Contribution to Student Life Award, the Student Senate Leadership Award and the University Service Award.
The Contribution to Student Life Award recognizes underclassmen who have significantly contributed to the improvement of the quality of student life during their time at Lehigh.
The Student Senate Leadership Award recognize juniors and seniors who exhibit outstanding leadership skills in aspects of student life, such as: Student Government, Student Organizations or Athletics.
And the University Service Award honors the senior whose influence, ideals and activities have been devoted unselfishly to serve the best interests of his Alma Mater and fellow students.
"When I recruited Michael six years ago, I told him that I not only believe he would contribute significantly to the men's soccer program but that I had a very strong sense that he would also influence the campus community," said The Ingrassia Family Men's Head Soccer Coach Dean Koski. "Michael scored the game winner in our 2019 Patriot League Championship game and during the pandemic, he founded Lehigh's first African Business Club which has already begun to connect Lehigh students to business leaders and alumni around the world.
"The Athletics Department and prestigious University Awards that Michael received are a testament to the significant contributions he has made to our campus and program. Excitingly, Michael is just getting started as he has so much more of his vision to accomplish. I am incredibly proud of Michael and all that he means to me as his Coach and mentor."
Tahiru enjoyed tremendous success on the soccer field during his four years at Lehigh, playing 56 games, starting 38 with three career goals and nine assists. As mentioned before, he scored the game-winning goal in the 2019 Patriot League Championship game, named to the All-Tournament team for his performance.
The Accra, Ghana native will graduate later this month with a bachelor's degree in finance.
