Men’s Varsity Four Boat Finishes Third to Highlight Kerr Cup

PHILADELPHIA – The Lehigh men's rowing team enjoyed a mixed day of results on Saturday at the Kerr Cup on the Schuylkill River. One of the Mountain Hawks' Varsity Four boats finished third in the grand final to lead the way, a second Varsity Four boat came in sixth and the Varsity Eight placed fourth in the petite final.
"We had a really great effort to start the day," said Lehigh assistant coach Chris Martensson. "We had the fastest time by a significant amount in our first race. But we raced a bit below what we're capable of in our priority boat, the Varsity Eight."
The morning saw Lehigh's "A" Varsity Four boat win its heat with a time of 7:21.1. Not long after, the Mountain Hawks' "B" boat came in second in its heat with a time of 7:46.7, only trailing Drexel.
Those boats went on to finish third and sixth in the grand final, with times of 7:33.3 and 8:09.1.
Meanwhile, the Varsity Eight posted a time of 6:41.9 in the heat and 6:49.3 in the petite final, good for fourth of six crews.
"It was very rough conditions today, extremely heavy winds with white capping on the water and rolling waves," said Martensson. "The thing the fours did well in the first race was they rowed long and rowed cleanly. That is definitely what helped them; they were able to tough out the conditions better than their competitors in the heats."
The Mountain Hawks (women and men) will return to the water next Saturday on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia where they'll face La Salle and Fairfield.
