UPDATED with revised schedule due to Saturday forecast.
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh softball team is headed back to Virginia to kick off spring break as the Mountain Hawks head to Harrisonburg for the JMU Classic, beginning Friday. The Mountain Hawks' third tournament of the season was originally supposed to feature four games over three days, but with inclement weather in Saturday's forecast Lehigh will instead play two games on Friday and then return home to campus. Lehigh will face No. 11/12 Arkansas at 10 a.m. Friday and then will take on host James Madison at 3 p.m.Â
The Mountain Hawks stand at 3-7 for the season after a 1-4 showing at the Liberty Invitational, where they split a doubleheader with George Washington on Friday and then dropped games to James Madison, Liberty and No. 25 Notre Dame. Sophomore Brooke Cannon led the way for Lehigh with a team-high .444 batting average, five hits and three RBIs. Senior Carley Barjaktarovich contributed five hits as well and scored twice. Junior Josie Charles scored a team-high three runs over the weekend.Â
Senior Gabriella Nori led the Mountain Hawk pitching staff at the Liberty Invitational, allowing four runs in 11 innings, highlighted by a complete-game victory over George Washington where she allowed a run on five hits with eight strikeouts. She totaled nine strikeouts and allowed one walk over the weekend.Â
No. 11/12 Arkansas sits at 14-4 for the season and currently has a six-game winning streak. The Razorbacks have lost against Illinois, Louisville and twice against No. 7 Washington. The Arkansas offense is led by redshirt senior Danielle Gibson who has tallied a team-high 29 hits and has maintained a .580 batting average. The Razorbacks' pitching staff is made up of redshirt sophomore Jenna Bloom (5-0, 2.82 ERA), redshirt junior Chenise Delce (5-1, 3.03 ERA) and redshirt senior Mary Haff (4-2, 3.33 ERA). Arkansas was a NCAA Super Regional participant last season.
Friday's game will be the first-ever meeting between Arkansas and Lehigh in softball.Â
James Madison went 1-4 last weekend at Liberty Invitational, picking up their only win against Lehigh by a 3-0 score. JMU was a Women's College World Series semifinalist last year but the Dukes currently sit at 4-9 for the season. Redshirt junior Hannah Shifflett leads in the batters box for James Madison with 11 hits and four home runs. Redshirt senior Alexis Bermudez and sophomore Alissa Humphrey have thrown all but three innings for JMU this season.Â
With last week's victory, James Madison leads the all-time series 6-2.Â
Following the JMU Classic, the Mountain Hawks will travel to Tampa, Fla., for six games at USF. Lehigh will face Niagara on March 16 and then will face Ohio State (11 a.m.) and Purdue (1:30 p.m.) on Thursday. The Mountain Hawks will face host USF (1:30 p.m.) on Friday before wrapping up their trip with games Saturday against Canisius (9 a.m.) and St. Thomas (4:30 p.m.).Â
