CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Lehigh field hockey junior Maddie Kahn was named to the 2022 United States Under-21 Women's National Team on Friday, continuing her strong involvement within the USA Field Hockey program. Last spring's Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Year, Kahn was one of 22 players named to the U-21 team.
"I am very honored to be selected," said Kahn. "It's a really cool opportunity to be selected, especially when not many people are given the chance to even try out for the team. The group of players selected for the team are a great group and I really enjoyed playing with them at the selection camp in North Carolina. Overall, it's a really exciting opportunity that I am ready to take advantage of while having fun doing it."
The selection came after a four-day camp in Charlotte. The head coach for the U-21 team is Boston University associate head coach Tracey Paul.
Kahn has been in the USA Field Hockey pipeline since her high school days, and had previously been selected to the U-17 and U-19 teams.
"The USA programming has given me opportunities to play and connect with the best players in the country," said Kahn. "It has also exposed me to many different goalkeeping coaches, allowing me to pick and choose aspects of their coaching that I liked and would apply to my game and aspects I would not apply to my game. The level of play while at U-21 training is a lot faster and players are much more skilled, because they are the best players in the U.S."
Kahn's U-21 experience will only help her continue to improve. Through three collegiate seasons, she owns a 1.95 goals against average and 74.4 save percentage.
"I think being selected to the team will also improve my play at Lehigh," said Kahn. "Not many players in the Patriot League are given this opportunity, so I think it gives me an advantage."
The 2021 season went down as Lehigh field hockey's strongest in nearly 30 years and one of the best in program history. The Mountain Hawks secured the program's first winning regular season and overall mark since 1994, while the four Patriot League victories were most since 1996 and most since the league expanded to seven teams with the addition of Boston University.
