Lehigh’s Epic Overtime Victory Captures the Patriot League Title and Secures First NCAA Tournament Berth in Program History

WASHINGTON – The Lehigh field hockey team has won it's second Patriot League Championship in program history by taking down No. 1 Boston University 2-1 in overtime at the Jacobs Complex on the campus of American University to secure the program's first-ever NCAA Tournament berth.

Sophomore Guusje Hogendoorn scored off a penalty corner 7:14 into the first overtime period to set off the Lehigh celebration as the Mountain Hawks win their first league title since 1994. Lehigh improves to 13-7 with the victory. The 13 wins tie the 1984 team for the third-most in school history.

Lehigh placed four student-athletes to the Patriot League All-Tournament Team. Senior goalkeeper Maddie Kahn was selected as the tournament's Most Valuable Player, while fellow senior Sarah Bonthuis, junior Julia Gatelein and Hogendoorn were also named to the All-Tournament Team.

"I think we worked really hard to be composed in critical moments throughout this ride," commented head coach Caitlin Dallmeyer. "I am really proud of how hard this team had to work to get here. The commitment to making this dream happen and believing in themselves."

The Mountain Hawks and Terriers played a scoreless first period with Boston University attempting nine shots as Lehigh was held without a shot. Boston University also earned five penalty corners as the Mountain Hawks did not earn one. Kahn made four saves in the first 15 minutes while first-year Zoe Day recorded a defensive save with one minute remaining and would head into the second quarter tied at 0-0.

The second period saw Lehigh dominate on offense, taking eight shots with six going on cage, but both squads were still tied at 0-0 heading into intermission.

"It hasn't been easy," added Dallmeyer. "BU handled us well in our first match this season, and did a good job of handling us in the first quarter and had to make adjustments going through the rest of the game. Our nerves were really high, but once we settled in, we began making bigger plays."

An evenly matched third quarter had a total of nine shots, five for Boston University and four for Lehigh. The Terriers got on the board in the 42nd minute to take a 1-0 advantage in the third period and carried it into the fourth period.

A little over four minutes into the fourth quarter, first-year Maddie Kandra deflected a pass that was sent in from outside the circle by Bonthuis, and ended up in the back of the cage to tie the match at 1-1. Lehigh had two prime opportunities to score the game-winner at the end of the fourth period, as a penalty corner was awarded to the team right before time expired. Boston University was able to hold off any scoring chances and the Mountain Hawks would head to overtime in back-to-back matches.

During the extra period, the Terriers registered four shots, which were all stopped by Kahn, and one penalty corner. Lehigh recorded two penalty corners and two shots in overtime and the Mountain Hawks made the second one count. With under three minutes remaining, Lehigh earned a penalty that was inserted by junior Lotte Smorenburg, stopped by senior Sydney White and blasted into the back of cage to send the entire Mountain Hawk team onto the field in pure jubilation.

"It's been a complete team effort. We did not receive a major award winner on this team, but we've been a well-balanced squad and end up as the league champions," commented Dallmeyer. "I credit our team's composure for being able to continue to perform under pressure and not be rattled. We knew what we needed to do to change the script of the game. Once we went into overtime, I knew we had a good chance of coming out with a win, because we had the best practice with American a game ago."

Kandra's goal was her seventh of the season while Bonthuis recorded her 11th assist of the year. Hogendoorn scored her fourth goal and second game-winning goal of this historic season. Defensively, Kahn recorded 12 saves on the 14 shots she faced, with Day earning her second defensive save of the season.

Lehigh has clinched its first-ever NCAA Tournament berth by capturing the Patriot League's automatic bid. The Mountain Hawks will find out their opponent and where they are traveling when the bracket is announced during the 2022 NCAA DI Field Hockey Tournament Selection Show, streamed live on NCAA.com Sunday at 10 p.m.
