Mountain Hawks Conclude Historic Season with Loss to Delaware in NCAA Tournament

11/9/2022 6:04:00 PM | Field Hockey

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Lehigh field hockey program saw their season come to an end on Wednesday afternoon with a 4-0 loss to Delaware in the team's first appearance in the NCAA Tournament hosted at North Carolina's Karen Shelton Stadium.

"It's crazy to think that before last year, we had three decades of losing seasons, and we were able to change that narrative last season and go from that point to the NCAA Tournament feels surreal," commented head coach Caitlin Dallmeyer. "We are very fortunate to have found the right people to bring into this program to get us to this point. They have been committed and focused and driven in a way that has inspired this group to achieve this level of success."

In the first period, the Blue Hens got off six shots off to Lehigh's one and Delaware scored twice within two minutes near the end of the quarter. The first goal was scored off a penalty corner, which ended up being the game-winning goal.

The Mountain Hawks attempted three shots with two going on goal, but neither team was able to score and Delaware went into halftime with a 2-0 advantage.

The Blue Hens struck quick to start the second half, finding the back of the cage 1:05 in to the period, to extend their lead to 3-0. Delaware then scored their fourth and final goal of the match with 35 seconds remaining in the third period to set the score at 4-0.

Lehigh dominated the fourth period, not allowing a single shot from the Blue Hens and took six shots, three of them going on goal. The final seconds ticked off the clock, which ended the match and the Mountain Hawks season.

"I give this senior class a lot of credit," added Dallmeyer. "They committed to Lehigh at a time when it was not cool to commit to come to Lehigh. They had other options that they turned down because they wanted to be a part of an evolving program and being critical components to that. They did it. They succeed and continued to lead a group around them to do the same and have achieved this level of success."

Defensively, senior Maddie Kahn recorded six saves, with three saves coming in the first half and three in the fourth period. Lehigh attempted ten shots in the match to Delaware's 16, and the Blue Hens earned three penalty corners to the Mountain Hawks two.

Senior Sarah Bonthuis and first-year Maddie Kandra led Lehigh with three shots Wednesday. Bonthuis' first shot in the second quarter required a Delaware defensive save.

Lehigh ends its historic season that saw many accolades. The Mountain Hawks claimed their first Patriot League Championship since 1994 and their second title in program history. The squad finished the season with an overall record of 13-8, which ties 1984 team for the third-most wins in school history.

"We're fortunate that we can celebrate a Patriot League Championship. We're going to take some time off to reflect and give our bodies a well-need rest and then get back to work and training again for next season. After experiencing this level of success, I think everyone will be motivated to experience another NCAA Tournament run. It has been an amazing experience and one that we understand does not come often or easy, but one that will become a constant for this program," concluded Dallmeyer.
