Mountain Hawk Seniors Reflect on Careers Ahead of Friday Senior Night
9/30/2021 3:49:00 PM | Women's Soccer, Student Athlete, Features
BETHLEHEM, Pa. –  The Lehigh women's soccer seniors immediately make their marks, helping the Mountain Hawks to the 2018 Patriot League Championship Game. They've helped Lehigh contend for a postseason berth in 2019 and last spring, while this season, the Mountain Hawks enter Friday in sole possession of first place in the standings with one third of the league games complete. This class includes people from all over the field, and many types of backgrounds, positions and experiences, with all making strong impacts on the program's success – both on and off the field. Together, they own a 3.63 average GPA as they're tremendous representations of Lehigh women's soccer, Lehigh Athletics and Lehigh University.
Â
We caught up with the seven seniors, who reflected on their careers ahead of Friday's Senior Night game vs. Boston University (6 p.m. opening kickoff).

What's your favorite Lehigh Women's Soccer memory up until this point?
AF: I don't think I can pinpoint one favorite memory because there have been so many. I think for me, the best memories are all the little things. Some of the small things that come to mind are the dance parties in the locker room before games (that I don't even partake in), the long bus rides with karaoke, stuffing ourselves with all the guac at Coach Cal's house, wearing two underarmors and gloves in a game because it was close to 30 degrees, taking thousands of pictures on Media Day or actually just playing in games with my best friends. I don't think I can come up with one single memory because my whole Lehigh women's soccer experience has been made up of so many great small things that I almost didn't notice until now.
Â
Describe the relationship with your fellow seniors.
AF: My fellow seniors are my best friends. It is crazy to think that we all ended up here, and how different our lives would be if one of us hadn't decided to come here. I couldn't imagine being here without them. We have gone through so many ups and downs together as a class, but I wouldn't have wanted to go through it with anyone else. I know that I can count on them for anything and they will always have my back. We always celebrate each other's accomplishments, push each other to be our best and are also always there for each other when someone is going through a tough time. I think this is what makes us unique. We champion each other through the good times and the bad, and I am forever grateful for every single person in our class.
Describe the feeling going into Senior Night. What are some of the thoughts going through your mind as you're nearing the end of your collegiate career?
AF: The feeling going into Senior Night is surreal. It feels like just yesterday, I was moving into my freshman dorm. The time has flown by faster than I could have ever imagined. Everyone is always telling you to cherish your time here because it flies by, and I'm just starting to realize that they were really right. Soccer has always been a part of my identity for as long as I can remember, and it's crazy to think that that is about to change. Being a college athlete has been one of the biggest blessing in my life and with the time coming to an end, I am able to realize that I am so grateful to have been a part of this team. While there were definitely challenges along the way, I am realizing that I wouldn't have changed the past four years for anything in the world.
What will you miss most about Lehigh Women's Soccer?
AF: There are so many things that I am going to miss about Lehigh women's soccer. Being a part of this team has taught me so much about myself that I will forever be thankful for. I am going to miss my teammates so much, especially in all the little things. Whether it's talking about random stuff in the locker room, the long bus rides where we play games and half the team gets motion sickness from the jerkiness of the bus, or messing around and having fun at practice, all of these memories I will cherish for a lifetime. Being a senior now, it is so easy to see that sometimes I took these memories for granted, but looking back at it now, I also am so thankful for all these memories. While I will miss playing the game of soccer, I will miss the comradery, true friendship and perseverance through adversity with the team the most.
Â
What legacy do you hope to leave?
AF: I hope to leave a legacy of hard work and positivity. While I may not be playing this year, I hope that people remember me cheering them on from the bench and being a voice of positivity during hard times. I also hope to leave a legacy of hard work. While sometimes it can feel like your hard work goes unnoticed, I hope people remember that hard work is something you can always rely on. Soccer and life may not always go the way that you want them to, but if you persevere through hard work, it will all work out in the end. I hope to be a part of the ongoing LUWS legacy of toughness and hard work, in and out of soccer.
What are your postgraduate plans?
AF: I will be working for PwC as an Assurance Associate in their New York City office. I am really excited to start my career. I am also so excited for this next chapter of my life because Courtney is also working for PwC in New York, so we'll be living together in the city.

Â
What's your favorite Lehigh Women's Soccer memory up until this point?
CS: I think my favorite memory on the team was our playoff run my freshman year. This is such a good memory for me because we were not expected to even make it into the tournament. We really came together as a team and had crazy victories such as when we scored last-minute against Bucknell and then beat Colgate. All of these games showed how hard we fought as a team to make it to the final.Â
Â
Describe the relationship with your fellow seniors.
CS: I love the girls in my grade and I know that I can count on all of them to be there for me. I think we all push each other to be better in the classroom and on the field. We also know how to have fun and make memories together. Specific memories that come to mind are the times that we have celebrated everyone's birthday and always make an effort to make each person feel special on those days. We have also been through a lot of different things together and have found ways to come together through adversity. Going through the COVID year brought us together as that was likely our hardest year at Lehigh. We really had to rely on each other for strength when we were essentially in quarantine for the entire spring season. I am so grateful for my class and the impact that each person has had on my life. They are the main reason I love this team and have made my experience at Lehigh so fun and fulfilled.Â
Â
Describe the feeling going into Senior Night. What are some of the thoughts going through your mind as you're nearing the end of your collegiate career?
CS: I have mixed emotions going into Senior Night. It definitely makes me sad because it reminds me that my time is coming to an end of being part of this team and playing soccer at a competitive level. But it also makes me think about legacy and how we as seniors can try to leave an impact on this team. We will always be a part of this team, but it will just look different after the season is over. Senior Night also makes me excited for the rest of this season and how much potential our team has to work hard and compete in our league.Â
Â
What will you miss most about Lehigh Women's Soccer?
CS: I will miss the team and the many memories we have together. I will miss going to practice and spending time with my teammates. I think of the fun and competitive games we play at practice, but also the difficult team challenges that we have gotten through together. I love that we have each other's backs and we are a team that looks to support one other. I will miss soccer itself, but like I said, the team is what makes soccer fun and an important part of my college experience.Â
Â
What legacy do you hope to leave?
CS: I hope to leave a legacy of working hard for your teammates and caring for them, on and off the field. I try to look for ways to care for my teammates and encourage people when they are doing something well. I hope that all of this is reflected in how I carry myself, on and off the field. I hope that our class as a whole has impacted the culture of the team to be one that is welcoming and caring for the wellbeing of each person. Also, a culture of working hard and showing up each day to get better and encourage one another. I hope that these ideas remain as the team moves forward after we are gone.Â
Â
What are your postgraduate plans?
CS: I will be working at PricewaterhouseCoopers in the Financial Markets and Real Estate group as an associate in the New York city office. I will likely be living with Abby, another senior, who is also working at the same company. I am very excited to explore NYC and start my career in the Finance and Real Estate industry.Â

Â
What's your favorite Lehigh Women's Soccer memory up until this point?
SS: Singing as a team to "When I Was Your Man" by Bruno Mars is by far my favorite LUWS memory. We all sat in one row of our locker room as a family and sang to our hearts' content. It's one of those moments that during it, I thought to myself hold onto this, because you'll never want to forget it.
Â
Describe the relationship with your fellow seniors.
SS: To have been surrounded by such strong and independent women these past four years has taught me more than I could have imagined. I have learned more about myself, both on and off the field, through my classmates than I would have had I gone to any other school. I cannot wait to see what the future holds for them in their future endeavors, and I look forward to building off of what we started here, and many more things to come.
Â
Describe the feeling going into Senior Night. What are some of the thoughts going through your mind as you're nearing the end of your collegiate career?
SS: In the words of our athletic trainer Christian, I'm doing my best to "live where my feet are planted." Life, nor my career, was as I had pictured it would have been four years ago, but I'm better because of it. I'm most looking forward to walking on the field with my brother next to me this Senior Night. He's the one I did all of this for, and I sure hope I made him proud.
Â
What will you miss most about Lehigh Women's Soccer?
SS: I will miss seeing Dom (Carlineo) at our lifts, even when they were at 6 a.m. I'll miss our walk from the locker room to the game field, even though I won't miss having to hear the noise of cleats on concrete. I'll miss lighting each other's candles before games, even though the wax would drip all over me. And most importantly, I'm going to miss having an excuse to see my 27 current teammates every day, and all of those who came and left before them.
Â
What legacy do you hope to leave?
SS: I hope to leave a legacy behind as someone whose love for the game was greater than it all. I want to be remembered as the person whose favorite part about soccer is juggling, the girl who loves her dogs more than anything in the world, and someone who would eat pomegranate Honey Stinger gummies like nobody's business. As someone who would dance and sing at the top of her lungs like her life depended on it, a girl whose most used vocabulary word was y'all. The person who made everyone feel welcomed, loved and appreciated, the girl who made it her job to leave people in the room happier than they had felt before coming into it, and someone who didn't quit, no matter the obstacles put in her path.
Â
What are your postgraduate plans?
SS: I plan to attend graduate school to pursue a Master's Degree in Broadcast Journalism on a Sports Media and Communication track, with aspirations to become an ESPN broadcaster.

Â
What's your favorite Lehigh Women's Soccer memory up until this point?
RVS: PLC weekend is always a memory I keep close to my heart. The entire tournament, Kayla's OT goal up until the championship game is unforgettable. Being able to compete for a championship with the team and spend a weekend cramming for exams really is the epitome of being a Division I student-athlete. The atmosphere of the weekend still gives me the chills. Once my soccer career comes to an end, I will always look back on this weekend and remember that that is why I decided to play here – to gain lifelong friendships with my teammates, receive a top education and compete for a PLC.Â
Â
Describe the relationship with your fellow seniors.
RVS: I never think to myself "what if I chose a different school than Lehigh," and this is because I hate to think about not having these girls by my side since freshman year. Soccer brought us together and without them, the struggles of college would have been more difficult to overcome. I can always count on each of them to help me out or pick me up if they know something is wrong. That is what's special about my class; no matter what anyone is going through in their own life, you can always expect a text or for them to show up outside of your room just checking in to see how you are doing.Â
Â
Describe the feeling going into Senior Night. What are some of the thoughts going through your mind as you're nearing the end of your collegiate career?
RVS: Looking back on my collegiate career thus far, I am proud of myself. Through the ups and downs I faced, I always managed to grow stronger emotionally and intellectually. Being supported by my teammates all four years and my coaching staff is more than I could have asked for and I am grateful to have been a part of this program. It is definitely bittersweet, knowing that soon I will never compete at the collegiate level again scares me, but I look back to my younger self and I am always reminded that this is what I always wanted for her and I accomplished it.Â
Â
What will you miss most about Lehigh Women's Soccer?
RVS: The team!! Thinking about all four teams I have been on at Lehigh, I have loved all in different ways. The connections I was able to create with each teammate is unlike any other team I have been on. The atmosphere in practice, the riff-offs post games, and dying of laughter with my teammates in the locker room continues to tell me that LUWS is not just about soccer, but it's also about my teammates. Those are the girls who get me to push myself every day, on and off the field, and have helped build me into the woman I am today. Â
Â
What legacy do you hope to leave?
RVS: I hope to leave a legacy full of courage. Courage to be myself, on and off the field, and courage to speak up. I always tried to help my teammates stand strong and tall when facing adversities, so I hope they continue to be strong in all aspects of their lives moving forward. Â
What are your postgraduate plans?
RVS: I will be entering the professional field as a Financial Services Business Consultant for Ernst & Young (EY)!

Â
What's your favorite Lehigh Women's Soccer memory up until this point?
ML: My favorite memory was beating Laf this year with 25 seconds left on the clock. Sophomore year, I remember how frustrating it was to lose to them, so beating them during my senior season (especially in the last couple seconds of the game) was an electric feeling.
Â
Describe the relationship with your fellow seniors.
ML: My fellow seniors are my best friends. They are the reason it has been worth it to push through the many obstacles that being a DI athlete brings – such as injuries, tough practices, summer workouts and COVID social restrictions. Freshman year, I knew I had made the right decision coming to Lehigh because of my class and how they make me feel at home, away from home.
Describe the feeling going into Senior Night. What are some of the thoughts going through your mind as you're nearing the end of your collegiate career?
ML: I know this is cliché, but I cannot believe I am a senior. I feel extremely grateful to be where I am – at a top academic school, playing Division I soccer and surrounded by a team that I Iove. I have been trying to soak up every moment of this season, but even still, it has been flying by. I often think about how a younger version of myself would be so happy looking at where I am now; I am exactly where I want to be and am meant to be. I am so thankful for this team and the opportunity to be a part of it.
What will you miss most about Lehigh Women's Soccer?
ML: I will miss my teammates the most. I have said this to my class a few times, but this is truly my favorite team I have ever been a part of. The energy we have as a group is truly unmatched, and I will miss sharing laughs at practice, screaming songs in the locker room and the rush we all get when we score a goal and run to hug each other. Spending time with this group every day is something I am very thankful for, and I don't want to think about not having that in my everyday routine.
Â
What legacy do you hope to leave?
ML: I hope to leave a legacy of the importance of balance. I am biased, but I think that being a student-athlete at Lehigh is the best collegiate experience anyone can get because of its unparalleled opportunity for balance. I think a lot of student athletes struggle to find a balance between academics, athletics, social/mental wellness. This is something that I think is important not only as a college athlete, but also in life in general. I have made a lot of improvements since my freshman year in finding the right balance in life, and I hope everyone who joins this program finds the sweet-spot between pushing themselves for personal growth, and knowing when to prioritize their personal well-being.
What are your postgraduate plans?
ML: I accepted a full-time offer to work with Bank of America, Merrill Lynch in their Financial Advisory line of business. I'll be living in Philly, which is close to home for me so I am looking forward to spending more time with my family!

Â
What's your favorite Lehigh Women's Soccer memory up until this point?
BC: My favorite Lehigh women's soccer memory up to this point definitely has to be freshman year making a big underdog playoff run. Beating Bucknell in the final seconds of OT in the quarterfinals and going on to beat Colgate to make it into the PL Finals was an amazing feeling and the energy among the team was unmatched.Â
Â
Describe the relationship with your fellow seniors.
BC: "Every brunette needs a blonde best frien." Lucky me, I got six blonde best friends. I am extremely grateful for my fellow seniors; they never fail to be there for me and bring a smile to my face. They have been my biggest support system through everything. I don't think I could have survived these past four years without them. They are some of the funniest and craziest people I ever met and whenever we are together, I am wheezing from laughing so hard. I know next year we are all going to different places, but I am determined to remain friends with all of them because they are amazing people I hope to have in my life for a long time.Â
Â
Describe the feeling going into Senior Night. What are some of the thoughts going through your mind as you're nearing the end of your collegiate career?
BC: I am definitely sad coming toward the end of my time here at Lehigh. Having already suffered a career-ending injury, it was a hard thing to grasp not being able to play the sport I held so dear to my heart for so long, but I am excited to dive into something else in the next chapter of my life. I've played sports my whole life, so finding my identity outside of being an athlete and teammate will be a big transition for me.Â
Â
What will you miss most about Lehigh Women's Soccer?
BC: I will definitely miss the team atmosphere the most. I am eternally grateful to my teammates for making Lehigh feel like home. I will miss singing in the locker room and messing around on the bus with my teammates. I will miss showing up to practice and getting the opportunity to play the sport I love with the people I love. Nothing will ever compare to the family environment LUWS has created and I am honored to be a part of.Â
Â
What legacy do you hope to leave?
BC: I want to leave a legacy of hard work and positivity. I hope to have been known for my team-first attitude and bringing high energy every day. I want to inspire others that are ever in the same spot I was, being injured multiple times, to never give up and that there is light at the end of the tunnel. I hope others understand thatÂ
Â
What are your postgraduate plans?
BC: I am applying to accelerated nursing and physician assistant programs to hopefully work in the medical field in the near future.

Â
What's your favorite Lehigh Women's Soccer memory up until this point?
EK: There are so many things that come to mind when I think of Lehigh women's soccer. I think in general, some of my favorite memories are made in the locker room before games. Everyone coming together to sing and dance to get pumped up for the game is always so fun. Our first home game this season, I remember Wendie put on "All I Want for Christmas is You," and everyone was running around the locker room screaming the lyrics, in the middle of September. Moments like these let you forget everything else that is going on and just let loose.
Â
Describe the relationship with your fellow seniors.
EK: I am beyond grateful for each one of my classmates. I never thought my relationships with each one of them would grow as much as they have over these past four years, into everlasting friendships. Each of us have our own personalities and roles, both on and off the field, and I think this is what makes us all so close. When it comes to soccer… Abby's encouragement motivates everyone to work hard each day, Bridget's positivity lifts everyone up, Becca's creativity makes her super unpredictable, Sydney's work rate is always so high, Megan's tenacity is contagious and Courtney's hustle is unmatched. I have such a unique relationship with each one of these girls, and they are a huge reason being a part of Lehigh women's soccer has been one of the best decisions I made.
Â
Describe the feeling going into Senior Night. What are some of the thoughts going through your mind as you're nearing the end of your collegiate career?
EK: It's a pretty surreal feeling that it's already Senior Night. These past four years have absolutely flown by. I am super grateful for the memories and friendships I have gained from LUWS. I will use some of the leadership, problem-solving and conversation skills I have learned throughout this program in my future relationships and profession. Senior Night is such a bittersweet day because I get to realize all the people and opportunities I am grateful for, but also all I will have to leave behind. I will be returning to the LUWS family in some capacity next year, so I am very excited for what the future holds for me.
Â
What will you miss most about Lehigh Women's Soccer?
EK: I will miss every single person involved with LUWS. Each of the girls on this team brings something so special, and makes every hard day worth it. I will miss the pregame locker rooms, post practice showers, tailgates, singing on the bus and the competitiveness every day at practice. The coaching staff has helped me develop more over these past four years than I thought possible. They have pushed me to step up and work with my teammates to find success, while finding the confidence within myself. LUWS has provided me with such a strong support system, which has helped me learn so much about myself, and the small part I play in such a close-knit community.
Â
What legacy do you hope to leave?
EK: I hope my legacy on LUWS extends beyond the soccer field. I hope people who come after me look at my accomplishments from freshmen year to senior year and realize that it is a process. By pushing yourself every day and finding the positives in the hardest situations, you will find success. I hope younger soccer players looking to go to Lehigh can look up to my play and strive to get where I am, just like I have done with past players before me. I love this team and program, and I hope the relationships I have built and the fun I have had at Lehigh, are remembered by all my teammates.
Â
What are your postgraduate plans?
EK: I will be returning to Lehigh next year to complete my Master's in Elementary Education. As of right now, I will be the graduate assistant for LUWS, but I have not taken playing next year completely off the table. After my fifth year, I hope to become an elementary school teacher. In the far future, I would like to use my psychology degree to become a school counselor and maybe even do something to help underprivileged children get the same opportunity I did to play college sports.
