BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Attempting to capture its first victory of the 2021 season, the Lehigh volleyball team hosts the inaugural Lehigh Steel Tournament, hosting the likes of St. Francis Brooklyn, Dartmouth and Binghamton Friday and Saturday afternoon at Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall.

The Mountain Hawks host St. Francis Brooklyn on Friday at noon, Dartmouth at 7 p.m. and Binghamton Saturday at 4 p.m. to round out the weekend.

Lehigh is coming off a trio of losses in Blacksburg, falling to Virginia Tech, Elon and Toledo to open the season. The Mountain Hawks are 0-3 to begin the campaign for the third consecutive year.

Fifth year hitter Hannah Wright has been the most impressive part of Lehigh's offense, coming out of the weekend with two 10 or more kill performances including 14 against Toledo in the weekend finale. She's averaging 3.09 kills per set and is hitting .202. Fellow fifth year senior Sabrina Lancaster is second on the team with 26 kills at a mark of 2.60 per set. Freshman Megan Schulte looked impressive in her first two matches of the weekend, registering a season-best 15 kills with five digs and two blocks in a five-set thriller vs. Virginia Tech on Friday.

Defensively, both freshmen Makena Smith and Emily Stewart lead the way with 10 blocks each with sophomore Sophia Meagher coming in second with nine. Smith also leads the team with 87 assists in her first three career matches. Freshman libero Kyleigh Brown averaged 3.54 digs per set and accumulated a total of 46.

As a team, Lehigh is hitting .142 and averaging 10.5 kills per set. They are holding opponents to an attack percentage of .267.

St. Francis Brooklyn comes into the weekend dropping three of its first four matches to open 2021. The Terriers fell to Hofstra on Tuesday night, 3-1 and also have defeats to Delaware State and Patriot League foe Bucknell. The only win of the season so far came by way of a four-set victory over Saint Peter's. Carla Hernandez has 30 kills so far to pace the team, while Camelia Melendez is averaging 4.40 kills per set. Angelee Ng leads with 86 assists, Cristal Paulino has 22 blocks to lead the team while Alasha Colon is averaging 4.31 digs per set with a total of 69.

Friday's matchup will be the first all-time between Lehigh and St. Francis Brooklyn.

Dartmouth is playing volleyball for the first time since 2019 after having its season canceled during the 2020-21 school year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Its campaign opens against Binghamton on Friday afternoon before taking on the Mountain Hawks at night.

The Big Green ended the 2019 season with a 10-15 record, winning three consecutive matches against Merrimack, Columbia and Cornell to conclude the year. Dartmouth was 4-8 in Ivy League play, also earning a non-league victory over Holy Cross on Sept. 21, 2019 earlier in the season.

Dartmouth returns nine players to a roster from 2019 with four seniors and five juniors. Six sophomores and four freshmen will make their collegiate debuts against the Bearcats Friday afternoon.
All-time, Lehigh is 0-1 against Dartmouth. The Big Green picked up a 3-1 victory over the Mountain Hawks at Sacred Heart on Sept. 4, 2010.

Finally, Binghamton comes into the weekend sporting a record of 1-2 following a win over host school Morgan State last Saturday, falling to Towson and Navy. Stefana Stan and Annie Bart come into the weekend tied for team lead in kills with 18, while Anna Sprys has 11. Kiara Adams has a team-best 40 assists, while Emily Rail leads the team with 34 digs. The Bearcats are hitting .010 as a team following three matches, while opponents are hitting .220 against them.
