9/4/2021 12:41:00 AM | Volleyball
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – A rowdy Leeman Turner Arena crowd certainly helped matters, as the Lehigh volleyball split the day after earning a four-set victory over St. Francis Brooklyn (25-15, 22-25, 25-12, 25-18) in the Steel Tournament opener while falling to Dartmouth (26-24, 25-23, 20-25, 15-25, 13-15) in five sets to close the evening at home. The Mountain Hawks (1-4) have dropped four of its first five matches to open the 2021 season.
Lehigh looked in rhythm early, taking the first set over the Terriers in dominant fashion, 25-15. The Mountain Hawks hit .450 as a team for the set with 11 kills.
St. Francis Brooklyn battled back, taking the momentum from the end of the first and transitioned into the second with a 25-22 victory to even the match up at one apiece.
From that point forward, it was all Lehigh, dominating the third set 25-12 to take a 2-1 lead and hanging tough and getting the seven-point win in the fourth to earn its first victory of the 2021 season.
Freshman Megan Schulte registered a career-high 18 kills with 11 digs, adding four total blocks. Hannah Wright tallied 11 kills, while freshman setter Makena Smith finished with 35 assists and 10 digs. Lehigh hit a season-best .396 for the match, with just 11 errors on 101 attacks.
With a seven-hour layoff between matches, the Mountain Hawks got back to work in the night-cap, taking on a Dartmouth team that earned a three-set sweep over Binghamton just hours earlier.
The Mountain Hawks made quick work of the Big Green to take the first two sets, 26-24 and 25-23, despite the back-and-forth feeling between the two squads. Dartmouth used that to its advantage in the third, coming from behind to get the 25-20 victory and again in the fourth by way of a 25-15 set win.
Playing in just its second five-set match of the young season so far, the Mountain Hawks stuck even to the Big Green for most of the fifth, watching Dartmouth pull away late for the 15-13 win.
Schulte, who set a career-high with 18 kills in the first match of the day, broke her mark with 21 against Dartmouth, hitting 227 on 66 attacks. She also added 16 digs and three block assists for her second consecutive double-double. Sabrina Lancaster added 16 kills, while Hannah Wright had seven and Sophia Meagher had five.
Lehigh hit .158 for the match including .280 in the fifth and final set, despite the defeat.
The Mountain Hawks conclude the weekend and the tournament on Saturday at 4 p.m. against Binghamton.
