BETHLEHEM, Pa. – It was another dominant performance for the Lehigh volleyball team, who came away with a three-set sweep of Binghamton (25-14, 25-19, 25-21) to improve to 2-4 on the 2021 season and finish the Lehigh Steel Tournament with a 2-1 record.
The Bearcats (1-5) were out of energy by the end of the match against the Mountain Hawks (2-4), having went five sets earlier in the day against St. Francis Brooklyn. Binghamton trailed early and Lehigh wouldn't let up.
"We definitely did a great job with our serving today," said head coach Alexa Keckler. "I was pretty pleased we were able to get them out of system. We did a pretty good job from a depth standpoint and had a lot of contributors in this match. That was really nice.
"We saw our middles get a little more action today which is something we were more focused on. Overall pleased to be able to finish in three, get the job done but in particular from the service line."
Lehigh got out to an early lead and were able to extend it by seven points towards the latter part of the first set. Following a kill from Stefana Stan, the Mountain Hawks were able to rattle off four consecutive decisions, thanks to a Lylah Washington kill and service ace for Megan Schulte.
With the second set all knotted at eight apiece, Lehigh scored six straight points to take a 14-8 lead. Binghamton stayed close within two at one point, but the Mountain Hawks scored five of the last six points to come away with the 25-19 win in set 2.
Runs by Lehigh in the third and final set gave it a comfortable lead and despite a late set push from Binghamton with three consecutive points to make it 24-21, the Mountain Hawks held on for the victory by way of Hannah Wright's sixth kill of the contest.
"Overall, from an attacking standpoint they [Binghamton] were still able to find ways to score around us," said Keckler. "I thought our team did a really nice job of adjusting today. We were finding the floor a little bit better. It was a longer early match for Binghamton and they certainly still brought some firepower and our girls did a good job containing that."
Schulte picked up her third straight match with double-digit kills, notching 10 to lead all players on the court. Wright added six, while Emily Stewart and Sabrina Lancaster each had three. Makena Smith led the way with 13 assists, three block assists and four digs, while Kyleigh Brown had 20 digs to pace the team.
Stewart was a magician from the service line, finishing with five aces.
The Mountain Hawks hit .129 as a team with 28 kills. They out-dug Binghamton, 48-42, with eight blocks, 10 aces and 26 assists.
Lehigh heads back on the road next weekend for the Tiger Invitational at Towson, taking on the host team, then Florida Atlantic and Temple on Saturday.
