Lehigh Continues August Schedule at Drexel Thursday, Home vs. Siena Sunday

8/24/2021 6:50:00 PM | Women's Soccer

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Following a competitive 1-0 defeat at Monmouth Friday, the Lehigh women's soccer team returns to a busy schedule – featuring multiple games in a week – for the first time since 2019. The Mountain Hawks travel to Drexel on Thursday for a 7 p.m. opening kickoff (in a game originally scheduled for 6 p.m.) before returning home Sunday for their home opener vs. Siena. Gametime against the Saints is set for 3 p.m. following the Lehigh men's soccer team hosting Vermont at noon.

For Sunday's home game, for any spectators who prefer physically-distanced seating, the section at the North end of the bleachers is marked with physically-distanced signage. For more information on Lehigh Athletics' COVID-19 safety measures, please click here

Last Friday's season opener featured several shifts in momentum in which each side controlled play. Lehigh was outshot 8-4 in the first half, but the Mountain Hawks held a 4-1 edge in shots on goal. Monmouth scored the game's only goal in the 81st minute and Lehigh had chances late, posting three shots and two corner kicks over the game's final 1:24, but Monmouth goalkeeper Rebecca Winslow made a big save from in close to preserve her team's 1-0 victory.

Over the last six games in the series, Lehigh is 1-1-4 against Monmouth. Friday included Monmouth's first goal against Lehigh in 530:35 of game action – especially impressive for the Mountain Hawks' defense considering Monmouth is a perennial MAAC power.

Lehigh saw a pair of goalkeepers make their collegiate debuts, as freshman Abby Trainor played the first half and stopped the only shot sent her way. Sophomore Violette Bonvallet saw more action in the second half, making three saves, including two spectacular point-blank stops. She allowed the game's only goal, but it came on a perfectly-placed shot off a free kick.

Drexel is coming off a 3-4-1 campaign last spring, 1-2-1 in the CAA. The last full season, the Dragons were 5-11-3 in 2019, 1-7-1 in the conference. Drexel is 0-1-0 on the young season following a 2-1 overtime defeat at Villanova last Thursday. Gabrielle Perrotto scored her first-career goal in the 36th minute, but the Wildcats responded with goals in the 69th and 96th minutes. Villanova finished with a 22-11 edge in shots. Drexel's Miyuki Schoyen made six saves in goal.

Lehigh and Drexel last played in 2001, a 1-0 Lehigh victory. Overall, the Mountain Hawks are 3-1 in the all-time series. The last time the teams played in Philadelphia was 1999 – a 2-0 Dragons' victory. Lehigh scored nine goals in the first-ever meeting between the two sides in 1994, which remains as the program record to this day.

The defending MAAC Champions, Siena finished last spring 6-1-2, 4-0-1 in the conference. The top seed in the MAAC tournament, the Saints beat eighth-seeded Iona in the quarterfinals (3-0), fourth-seeded Rider in the semifinals (2-1) then tied third-seeded Monmouth in the championship game (before winning on penalty kicks). The Saints currently own a 2-0 record (ahead of a home matchup vs. Vermont on Thursday). Siena's wins came at home vs. Binghamton (2-0) and at Holy Cross (2-1). Siena's two game-winning goals were scored by Katrina Kurtz (vs. Binghamton) and Rebecca Rolland (vs. Holy Cross). Brooke Boermeester has played every minute in goal, tallying a 0.50 goals against average and 92.3 save percentage.

Sunday will mark the first-ever meeting between Lehigh and Siena.

Following Sunday's game, the Mountain Hawks will head to St. John's next Thursday (Sept. 2) for a 7 p.m. kickoff against the Red Storm.
