BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh head field hockey coach Caitlin Dallmeyer announced the Mountain Hawks' incoming class of 2025 on Thursday, a class that features four student-athletes from all over the country and world.
"Overall, this is a small but mighty class," said Dallmeyer. "They faced a lot of adversity in their recruiting process, and in getting to know and understand Lehigh while in the midst of a pandemic. We feel fortunate that they were willing to put faith in our staff and the university throughout a unique recruiting and admissions process. While we did not have nearly as many face-to-face engagements with this group (outside of Zoom of course), we have bottled-up excitement and energy around their arrival, ready to be unloaded when they step on campus as a member of LUFH in just a few months.
"We are confident that next year will be an exciting year for LUFH and great success is in our near future. I know that this class will contribute to helping us reach our goals while exemplifying our team values in the process."
Jenny Canoni • GK • Bronxville, N.Y. • Hackley School • AGH Field Hockey Club
Canoni was a four-year varsity starter and senior co-captain at Hackley School. She was a two-time team MVP and four-time first team All-League honoree. Canoni was named second team All-County. Placing second at the 2018 AAU Junior Olympics, she was a five-time National Indoor Tournament participation and two-time National Club Championship participant (garnering sixth place both years). Canoni played four years of varsity basketball while she was a four-year honor roll student in the classroom as well.
Why Lehigh? "I chose Lehigh because of the competitive academic and athletic environment, the beautiful campus and the seemingly infinite leadership opportunities. The drive and determination of both the players and the coaches really stood out to me and I wanted an opportunity to be a part of something that special."
Coach Dallmeyer on Canoni: "Jenny really impressed us with her personality, both on and off the field. She loves the game and you can see it radiate through her when she plays. She is vocal, aggressive and connects well with those around her often, which is the unifying factor. We are excited to have two very talented goalkeepers on our roster to train and help raise the level at practice so our forwards will be better prepared going into game play. Jenny's personality will be a great addition to the backfield and one we know will fit in seamlessly with our team."
Guusje Hogendoorn • M • Apeldoorn, The Netherlands • Gymnasium Apeldoorn • HC Ares
Hogendoorn has impressed on the field hockey field from a young age. From the age of 10, she always played on her first teams, which includes debuting at the age of 15 in the first ladies team (featuring athletes 18 and older). From the age of 16, Hogendoorn only played for the first ladies team. She played at the national top-level in U16-1 and came in second place as the most athletic student of Apeldoorn. In the classroom, Hogendoorn took the First Certificate Cambridge exam, as well as the Cambridge Advanced Exam. An honors student, Hogendoorn took Greek language and culture classes for six years, and Latin classes for three years.
Why Lehigh? "I chose Lehigh because it is my dream to study and play field hockey at a high level in the US. Lehigh University offers me that opportunity. By talking with the coaches and team members, I immediately felt really welcome. I feel like Lehigh is the perfect place for me to develop myself as a person and as a field hockey player. After all, Lehigh offers great academic programs and the opportunity to play in a competitive field hockey program."
Coach Dallmeyer on Hogendoorn: "Guusje was our most recent addition to this class. She has expertise both on the midfield and defense lines and has played at a high level throughout her developmental process. We are excited to see what position she fits best within our team and playing structures. Her strength on ball and distribution skills, along with her defensive footwork and positioning, will add great value to the style of hockey we are working to play."
Eleni Kountroubis • F • Lansdale, Pa. • North Penn High School • FSC Falcons
Kountroubis was a three-year varsity starter at North Penn High School. She was also a team captain and twice nominated for second team All-Conference. Kountroubis played club field hockey with FSC Falcons, a five-time National Indoor Tournament participant and two-year futures participant. Kountroubis was a multi-sport athlete, also as a two-year track and field hockey varsity letterwinner and two-time district and state qualifier. In the classroom, she was a four-year honor roll student, member of the National Honor Society, Key Club, Link Crew and Future Business Leaders of America.
Why Lehigh? "I chose Lehigh for the incredible academics they offer their students as well as the beautiful campus and I loved the fact that the team was so welcoming."
Coach Dallmeyer on Kountroubis: "Eleni is a fierce, aggressive and talented player. She brings great speed and versatility to our attack line, her vision and quick release have made her a tremendous asset to every team she has played on, resulting in goals scored and games won. We are excited for Eleni to contribute on our attack line and bring her relentless aggression to LUFH."
Cate Monaco • D • Richmond, Va. • Trinity Episcopal School • Richmond Panthers United
Monaco was named to the Max Field Hockey Class of 2021 top 100 after a four-year varsity career at Trinity Episcopal School. In her time, Trinity was ranked as high as No. 3 in the Mid-Atlantic Region. The team won its league (LIS) championship from 2017-19, including back-to-back undefeated seasons as a sophomore in 2018 and junior in 2019 – going a combined 44-0. Why Lehigh? "I chose Lehigh because I immediately felt welcome into the community. On my first on-campus visit with coaches and the team, everyone was so engaging. Later, I returned to the campus with my mom; I was so excited to show her around, and in that moment, I knew this was the place for me."
Coach Dallmeyer on Monaco: "Cate is a poised, calm and confident defender. Her maturity and thoughtfulness really impressed us throughout the recruiting process. She knew what she was looking for in a school and program. After meeting with her and her family, it was clear to all of us that Lehigh was a fit.
