Lehigh Sweeps Patriot League Softball Weekly Awards

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – After opening its season with a doubleheader sweep of Sacred Heart on Sunday, Lehigh swept the Patriot League softball weekly awards announced Tuesday. The Mountain Hawks outscored the Pioneers 18-2 in a doubleheader sweep that featured a number of strong performances. The three Patriot League awards went to junior Jaelynn Chesson (Player of the Week), junior Gabriella Nori (Pitcher of the Week) and freshman Brooke Cannon (Rookie of the Week).
Chesson led Lehigh in home runs in each of her first two seasons and picked up where she left off, hitting two in a 10-1 game-one victory. She hit a three-run blast to right center in the third inning, which broke a 1-1 tie and put the Mountain Hawks up for good. In her next at-bat Chesson hit a two-run home run to left, which extended Lehigh's lead to 6-1. Chesson brought home three more runs in her final at-bat when she reached on an error with the bases loaded. She finished with a career high five runs batted in and had her second multi-home run game in her last four games dating back to last season.
After being limited to 10 innings last season due to injury, Nori returned with a strong effort in game one, allowing a run on three hits with a walk and six strikeouts. Nori struck out the first four batters she faced and threw 71 pitches over five solid innings before departing with a nine-run lead. Senior Lainey Stephenson closed out the run-rule win with a scoreless sixth.
Lehigh's freshman class was outstanding in game two, an 8-1 Mountain Hawks win. Cannon started both games at second base and was 2-for-6 over the two games, but her two hits were impactful doubles. In game one, Cannon doubled to left center in her first career at-bat and later scored the tying run on a RBI single by junior Carley Barjaktarovich. Cannon staked Lehigh to a 3-0 lead in the second inning of the nightcap with a two-out, bases-clearing three-run double.
The Mountain Hawks will visit Seton Hall on Sunday for a doubleheader with first pitch for game one set for noon from South Orange, N.J.
