FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Lehigh softball team opened its 2021 campaign with a doubleheader sweep at Sacred Heart Sunday at Pioneer Park. Junior Jaelynn Chesson picked up where she left off in her first two seasons, hitting two home runs and driving in five in Lehigh's 10-1, six-inning game one win. The freshman class delivered in a big way in game two as the Mountain Hawks prevailed 8-1.
Four Lehigh pitchers combined to allow two runs on eight hits over the doubleheader sweep as the Mountain Hawks start 2-0 for the second straight year.
Sacred Heart (0-2) took a 1-0 lead after two innings in game one on Emily Carroll's solo home run before Lehigh scored 10 unanswered runs.
Freshman Brooke Cannon started a four-run third inning with a one out double to left center and then scored the tying run on a single by junior Carley Barjaktarovich. Three batters later, Chesson blasted a three-run home run to right center, giving the Mountain Hawks a 4-0 lead.
Barjaktarovich opened the fifth inning with a bunt single and again it was Chesson bringing her home with a two-run home run, this one to left field, to extend Lehigh's lead to 6-1. Chesson had Lehigh's last multi-homer game, hitting two against Ohio State on March 9 of last year. She now has 14 career home run.
Lehigh blew the game open with a four run sixth inning. The Mountain Hawks loaded the bases on three walks, before sophomore Josie Charles' RBI single played freshman Bella Egizio. Chesson then brought home three more runs when she reached on an error by the Pioneer center fielder with two outs.
Junior Gabriella Nori started in the circle and allowed a run on three hits over five innings with a walk and six strikeouts. Senior Lainey Stephenson struck out three in a scoreless sixth inning to close out the victory.
A two-out rally sparked the Mountain Hawks in the second inning of game two as Lehigh loaded the bases and Cannon cleared them with a double to left field.
Lehigh tacked on two more in the fourth as senior Allyson Dibsie led off with a double and scored on a triple to right by Egizio. The Mountain Hawks went up 5-1 as Barjaktarovich and Egizio executed a double steal with runners on the corners.
Egizio's second triple of the game plated two runs in the fifth and she then scored on a Barjaktarovich single.
Freshmen Katelyn Young and Ansley Dambach combined on a four-hitter in the circle, with Young allowing a run in four innings with five strikeouts and Dambach following with two strikeouts and two walks in three scoreless frames.
Egizio was 3-for-4 with three runs and three RBIs. Barjaktarovich had two hits in each game.
The Mountain Hawks will be back on the road next Sunday to face Seton Hall in a doubleheader. Game one is set to begin at noon from South Orange, N.J.
