Lehigh Seeks Second Straight Win As Georgetown Visits Saturday

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Coming off a dominant 38-6 victory at Bucknell last week, Lehigh seeks its second straight victory as the Mountain Hawks host Georgetown on Salute to Service Day, presented by Weis Markets. The Mountain Hawks were strong in all three phases last week at Bucknell. Lehigh gained 404 yards of offense and rushed for five touchdowns, while the defense limited the Bison to just 170 yards of offense, while recording three sacks and three interceptions. Lehigh's special teams blocked a punt for the second straight week with kicker Dylan Van Dusen making all five of his extra points and a field goal. Van Dusen and linebacker Mike DeNucci garnered Patriot League weekly awards for their efforts as Lehigh scored its most points since 2018 and racked up its largest margin of victory and fewest yards allowed since 2016. Georgetown is 2-6 overall and has dropped two straight to Lafayette and Fordham.
Lehigh delivered a strong performance in all three phases at Bucknell, resulting in the Mountain Hawks' first victory of the season. Offensively, the Mountain Hawks gained 404 yards and rushed for five touchdowns. Lehigh scored its most points since scoring 45 against Bucknell in 2018 and enjoyed its largest margin of victory since posting a 32-point win at Holy Cross in 2016. Defensively, Lehigh held Bucknell to just 170 yards while recording three interceptions. The 170 yards allowed are the fewest allowed by the Mountain Hawks since they allowed 177 in a 35-3 win at Georgetown in 2016. Special teams highlights included junior Tommy Lewis blocking his second punt in as many weeks and junior Dylan Van Dusen going 5-for-5 on extra points while adding a 28-yard field goal.
One week after its best defensive showing of the season against Holy Cross, the Mountain Hawks topped that mark at Bucknell. Lehigh held the Bison to just two field goals and 170 yards of total offense. The Mountain Hawks had a season-high eight tackles for loss and three interceptions while also adding three sacks. The 170 yards allowed were the fewest since allowing 177 to Georgetown in 2016. The three interceptions were Lehigh's most since recording three at New Hampshire in the 2016 playoffs. Senior Nate Norris led the way with 10 tackles and a sack. Senior Pete Haffner added six tackles and junior TyGee Leach and sophomore Mike DeNucci added five. DeNucci had two sacks, while Leach had two tackles for loss, two pass breakups and two quarterback hurries.
Lehigh's three running backs had a big day at Bucknell, combining for 164 rushing yards and five touchdowns. Sophomore Jack DiPietro led the way, rushing for 93 yards and his first two career touchdowns, while adding a team-best 71 receiving yards on three catches. DiPietro had Lehigh's two biggest gains of the day; a 44-yard reception on a screen pass that set up his one yard touchdown run to put Lehigh up 14-3, and then a 42 yard touchdown run late in the fourth quarter as the exclamation point to Lehigh's victory.
Georgetown plays its Patriot League finale Saturday as the Hoyas bring a 2-6 overall record and 1-4 league mark to Goodman Stadium. Last weekend, Georgetown struck first against Fordham only to see the Rams score 34 unanswered points on the way to a 41-20 victory. The Hoyas own wins over Delaware State and Bucknell this season and have dropped two straight since defeating the Bison 29-21 on Oct. 23. Junior Pierce Holley and senior Joe Brunell have split time at quarterback this season. Joshua Stakely and Herman Moultrie III have been the top two rushers, while Joshua Tomas leads the Hoyas in receiving with 44 catches for 600 yards and three touchdowns. Defensively, Georgetown has been stout against the pass as the Hoyas are allowing under 190 yards per game through the air. Justin Fonteneaux is the top tackler with 63 stops. Ahmad Wilson has 61 tackles and an interception.
Lehigh and Georgetown meet for the 26th time with the Mountain Hawks leading the series 19-6. Georgetown's double-overtime win in 2018 snapped a 17-game Lehigh winning streak in the series. The Brown and White met the Hoyas for the first time in 1901 and the teams did not meet between 1926 and 2001. Lehigh is 18-1 overall and 9-0 against Georgetown at Goodman Stadium since the Hoyas joined the Patriot League in 2001.
