BALTIMORE – Coming back from a 2-1 deficit on Saturday afternoon, the Lehigh volleyball team snapped its five-match losing streak with a thrilling five-set win at Loyola Maryland (19-25, 25-13, 11-25, 25-21, 15-13) from Reitz Arena. The Mountain Hawks (7-16, 3-9 PL), with only four matches remaining, stay alive in the hunt for a Patriot League Tournament berth, three matches behind sixth-place Navy ahead of their 2 p.m. matchup vs. the Midshipmen on Sunday.
Loyola opened the first set with a lead and never looked back, leading by as many as nine points and holding on for the 25-19 win, leading wire-to-wire. The Greyhounds hit .353 in the first with 16 kills and just four errors.
Lehigh opened the second set on a tear, going on a 9-3 push following six straight points and then another tremendous run, leading the set 18-5 following seven consecutive points on almost exclusively Loyola attack errors. The Mountain Hawks took four of the next six points to take a commanding 23-7 lead, and while Loyola own six of the next eight, Lehigh held on for the 25-13 victory.
The script was flipped in the third set, as the Greyhounds opened things up on a 12-5 push. Lehigh cut the gap to five, but Loyola got back out to a 19-10 lead, eventually holding on for the 25-11 victory following a 10-1 run to close out the set.
Lehigh hit .313 in the second set with just one error while Loyola hit .458 in the third set with 12 kills and one error to its credit.
A 7-3 lead for Loyola to start the fourth ballooned to a 10-6 advantage, but the Mountain Hawks (now down 2-1), took the lead back at 18-15 following five straight points. Loyola cut the gap back to just two points at one point, but Lehigh got a kill from Ava Hudson and an error for Abby Hamilton to come away with the 25-21 fourth set win, forcing a decisive fifth set.
Lehigh led the fifth from the get-go, getting out to an early 3-0 lead and eventually making it 8-5 following a Hudson kill and Sarah Burau ace. Loyola made it a one-point game late following three straight Lehigh match points, but Megan Schulte put the match away to complete the comeback, giving the Mountain Hawks the set, 15-13 and the match, 3-2.
The Mountain Hawks hit .201 for the match, out-blocking Loyola 11-5.
Lehigh will take on Navy Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. in Annapolis. The match is the re-scheduled date as Friday's matchup was postponed due to flooding in the area.
