Hot-hitting Midshipmen top Lehigh in straight sets

10/31/2021 4:45:00 PM | Volleyball

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – A day removed from a thrilling five-set victory at Loyola Maryland, the Lehigh volleyball team failed to capture that same magic, falling to Navy in straight sets (15-25, 16-25, 16-25) Sunday at Wesley A. Brown Fieldhouse. The Mountain Hawks (7-17, 3-10 PL) have just three matches remaining on the regular season schedule and are three matches behind sixth-place Loyola Maryland in the standings.

It was difficult to do much of anything against the Midshipmen (11-11, 7-6 PL) on Sunday, who were on top of their game offensively, hitting .434 as a team and .563 in the second set. Navy finished the afternoon with 42 kills on 76 attacks with only nine errors. The team had just two errors combined in the first two sets.

Sophomore Lylah Washington was the star of the match for Lehigh, totaling a team-high eight kills and just two errors with an attack percentage of .333.

Lehigh got out to an early first set lead, going on a 4-1 spurt before Navy answered back with five straight to take a 6-4 lead. The Mountain Hawks got within one at 8-7, but the Midshipmen finished the set on a 17-8 push to come out with the win.

It was five straight points for Navy to kick off Set 2, as Sabrina Lancaster broke the drought with a kill of her own. Lehigh clawed back within two points, but Navy got six straight tallies to pull ahead, 14-6. Late in the set, the Mountain Hawks got within five points, but the Mids rattled off four straight to come away with the 25-16 win heading into the extended break.

Much like the first two sets, Navy controlled the tempo of the third, never relinquishing the lead despite various attempts of overtaking by Lehigh. The Mountain Hawks got within two at 11-9, but seven straight points for Navy spelled the end, as it took an 18-9 advantage. Two straight Navy attack errors brought Lehigh back within seven points, but a kill by Jamie Llewellyn and a combo block by Avery Stowell and Anna Klemeyer put the final nails in the coffin, taking the set 25-16 and the match in straight sets.

Washington's eight kills were a team-high, with Sabrina Lancaster adding seven and Emily Stewart and Hannah Wright both contributing five. Makena Smith led the way with 15 assists, while Kyleigh Brown had eight digs.

For the most part, Lehigh struggled hitting the ball, finishing with a mark of .130 with 27 kills and 17 errors. Rarely being out-blocked on the year, Navy was able to come away with the edge, 6-4.

Lehigh will continue the road trip next weekend with an important Patriot League contest on the road at Bucknell on Friday night at 7 p.m., followed by The Rivalry at Lafayette on Saturday at 4 p.m. Both matches will be streamed live on ESPN+ (subscription required).
