Lehigh drops emotional Senior Day matchup to Colgate in four sets

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh volleyball team played an emotional fourth set, but a comeback victory just wasn't in the cards as the Mountain Hawks (6-16, 2-9 PL) fell to Colgate 3-1 (16-25, 25-23, 18-25, 26-28) on Saturday afternoon on Senior Day at Grace Hall. The loss is Lehigh's fifth straight heading into a four-match road trip with five matches remaining in the 2021 season.
It was a truly a senior performance for Sabrina Lancaster and Ava Hudson, who combined for 25 of Lehigh's 54 kills in the match with 14 and 11, respectively.
"I thought we were flat coming out of the first set," said head coach Alexa Keckler. "So that didn't help us for the rest of the match. We didn't come out with the push that we needed to. Offensively, we struggled in bursts today. We were hot and cold offensively.
"But ultimately, I thought the girls played really, really hard today. They played for each other, they fought, they battled and never gave up. We had so many great contributors and it was really awesome to see that."
Colgate led off the first set on a 14-7 run and led by as many as 10. Lehigh cut the gap to eight but the Raiders held on for the 25-16 win to go up 1-0.
Lehigh looked strong to kick off the second set, going on an 11-5 run to open and extended the lead to 14-6. Colgate battled back to trail 19-18, but Lehigh came back with three points to make it 22-18. Colgate traded paint for the remainder of the set with the Mountain Hawks prevailing, 25-23 following the kill by Lylah Washington.
The Mountain Hawks opened the third on a 7-2 push, but the Raiders answered back with four straight scores to trail 7-6. Trailing 9-7, Colgate rattled off 10 consecutive points on a Cami Carfino serve to lead 17-9. Lehigh battled to trail by three at 17-14, but the Raiders came away with the 25-18 win.
It looked as if Lehigh would force a fifth set when leading 17-13, but that was when Colgate got back into the match, winning five straight points to take a 18-17 lead. At 23-21, it was Lehigh that tied the match back up at 23 following two unforced Colgate errors, but a kill by Alli Lowe gave the Raiders match point for the first time. A kill for Sabrina Lancaster and an attack error for Lowe put the Mountain Hawks in a position to claim the set at 25-24, but the Raiders won four of the next five to come away with the 28-26 victory and 3-1 win.
In addition to strong nights for Lancaster (14 kills) and Hudson (11), Emily Stewart added 10 kills with five blocks and Lylah Washington finished with eight kills and 15 digs. Sarah Burau led the way with 20 assists, while Makena Smith added 19. Kyleigh Brown's 18 digs were a team-high.
For Colgate, Alli Lowe finished with a team-best 14 kills and 10 digs, while Libby Overmyer added 13 with six digs and Julia Kurowski had 38 assists.
The Mountain Hawks hit .174 for the match with a mark of .217 in the fourth set.
The program honored seniors Alina Lam, Ava Hudson, Victoria Jepson and Sarah Carman, as well as fifth-years Hannah Wright and Sabrina Lancaster with a special pre-match ceremony.
Next up for Lehigh, the team heads to Navy on Friday for a 7 p.m. match against the Midshipmen and going to Loyola Maryland on Saturday at 4 p.m.
