Mountain Hawks Place 13th at Penn State National Open

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The first five Mountain Hawks finished within 22 seconds of each other as the Lehigh women's cross country team placed 13th at the Penn State National Open on Friday morning. Senior Jamie Zamrin led Lehigh, coming in 52nd overall.
"This Lehigh squad is a very good team, but our team performance today was not indicative of how good we actually are," said head coach Debbie Utesch. "If we could have frozen the race at about two and a half miles, we were in great position, but we bonked with the heat and humidity. I think we got caught off guard a little bit and underestimated the heat and humidity, but we really only have minor adjustments to make to be ready for the Patriot League Championships [on Oct. 31]."
Zamrin posted a time of 22:31.1. Junior Madison Zaun was two spots behind in 54th (22:33.9). Freshman Maddison Hayes was the next Lehigh runner to finish, placing 76th (22:51.1) and she was followed by senior Jade Sessions in 78th (22:52.0) and freshman Christina Yakaboski in 80th (22:52.8).
Rounding out the Mountain Hawks' scorers were sophomore Andrea Miller in 87th (23:01.9) and sophomore Grace Kolbe in 109th (23:22.9). For the complete results, please click here.
"Jamie Zamrin is coming back into her full form and is going to be ready to go in two weeks," said Utesch. "Andrea Miller had a great race moving into our top seven as we get ready for the Patriot League Championships."
Those championships are set for Sunday, Oct. 31 at home. The women's 6K will begin at 11 a.m. Meanwhile, other Mountain Hawks who didn't compete at Penn State will be in action on Saturday at the Lafayette Leopard Invitational.
"We have a really strong team that's working together really, really well," said Utesch. "Now, we can start to rest and recover to get ready to race in the conference meet."
