BETHLEHEM, Pa. — Leading by as many as 18 points at the end of the third quarter, Bucknell went on a 21-5 run in the final 4:48 of the contest to come-from-behind and claim the 73-68 victory over the Lehigh women's basketball team Sunday afternoon at Stabler Arena. The loss drops the Mountain Hawks to 6-4 overall with a 2-4 record in central division play, while the Bison improve to 8-0, 6-0 in the division.
The Mountain Hawks clung to a 13-point lead at the end of the third quarter, but the Bison out-scored the Lehigh 27-9 in the final frame, also holding sophomore wing Frannie Hottinger without a basket in the final 7:18 of the game. Hottinger led all scorers with 24 points on the afternoon, shooting 8-of-10 from the field and a perfect 5-for-5 from the foul line. She also grabbed nine rebounds in 30 minutes of playing time.
Despite trailing early out of the gate in the first quarter, Lehigh found a little bit of breathing room after a Mariah Sexe 3-pointer extended the lead to 7-4 with 6:18 to play. A 3-pointer by Jamie Behar and two free throws by Hottinger pushed Lehigh's lead to six with 2:01, as the Mountain Hawks managed to lead by five points heading into the second.
Early in the second quarter, Ally Johnson's jumper made it a 3-point Lehigh lead with 9:37 to play, but Hottinger sparked an 8-0 Lehigh run over the next minute to take an 11-point, 26-15 advantage with 7:03 left, forcing Bucknell head coach Trevor Woodruff to call a 30-second timeout. A see-saw affair out of the timeout had the Bison within six with 2:17 to play, but the Mountain Hawks withstood the pressure, scoring five answered to close out the half with a 37-26 lead.
In the first half, Lehigh's story was the efficiency shooting the ball, going 41.9 percent (13-for-31) from the field and the rebounding, out-rebounding the Bison, 25-15. Bucknell shot just 33.3 percent (10-for-30) and 11.1 percent (1-for-9) from beyond-the-arc.
Lehigh shot off like a rocket to open the third quarter, seeing its lead dwindle to 10 points with 8:04 to play, but the Mountain Hawks got an 8-0 push capped by a 3-pointer from Hottinger to lead by 18 points, 49-31 with 6:23 remaining. The Bison were able to claw back by as little as 14 points on two occasions, most recently with 2:29 to play, but a pair of baskets from Emma Grothaus and Hottinger had Lehigh leading by 18 points with 1:40 left in the quarter.
Ally Johnson converted on a shot from distance with 1:22 to play, followed up by an Autumn Ceppi layup with seven to go, to cut the Lehigh lead to 59-46 heading into the final 10 minutes.
Bucknell scored the first four points of the fourth quarter to bring the Lehigh lead back down to single-digits with 8:25 to go, while Hottinger's 3-pointer with 7:18 left made it a 12-point game again.
From that point forward, the Bison made their ascent, scoring 11 straight points to tie the game at 63 with 1:07 left in regulation. All-in-all, Bucknell closed the game on a 20-2 run to take the victory by five points at Stabler Arena.
Frannie Hottinger led the way with 24 points for the Mountain Hawks, her third game of 20 or more points this season. Mary Clougherty scored 15 points, gathering seven rebounds with two assists and a steal.
As a team, Lehigh shot 38.7 percent (24-for-62) from the field and 40 percent (8-for-20) from beyond-the-arc. The Mountain Hawks held Bucknell to 31.3 percent (5-for-16) shooting from the perimeter.
Lehigh won the rebounding battle, 43-32 and scored 30 points in the paint. The Mountain Hawks led for 36:19, while the Bison held the lead for just 47 seconds.
