LEWISBURG, Pa. — After a slow start to begin the first quarter, the Lehigh women's basketball seemed to find their rhythm, but it was Bucknell who had the final say, getting the 14-point, 80-66 victory Sunday afternoon at Sojka Pavilion. The loss drops the Mountain Hawks to 4-2 overall with a 2-2 mark in central division play.
Bucknell came out of the gates strong on a 10-2 run to begin the first quarter after the Mountain Hawks missed their first six shots and 10 of their first 11. After an adjustment made late in the frame, Lehigh added six unanswered points to turn the seven-point deficit to just two points with 2:52 left. Sophomore guard Anna Harvey hit a 3-pointer with 1:13 left to close the margin to just a point as the Bison led 21-20 at the end of the first stanza.
After struggling to open the first quarter, freshman Mackenzie Kramer started the second off right with a jumper in the paint to give the Mountain Hawks the 22-21 lead. With the game tied up with 7:07 on the clock, the Bison started to pull away again, thanks to layups by Tai Johnson and Carly Krsul and then two free throws from Ally Johnson to give Bucknell a 31-25 lead.
Krsul capped off the 8-0 Bison run with layup at the 4:53 mark to pull ahead by eight and despite a 3-pointer from senior Mary Clougherty with 1:04 remaining to make it a four-point Bucknell lead, the Bison led 39-33 to close out the first half.
The third quarter started the way the first quarter started as the Bison began to pour on the points, leading things off on a 17-2 run to open the frame, leading by 20, 55-35 with 6:28 left. Two Jamie Behar baskets, a 3-pointer and a jumper, cut the deficit to just 13 points with 4:05 remaining.
Kramer came up clutch with a timely shot from beyond-the-arc with 1:48 left to close the gap back to seven points, but Abby Kapp answered back with a three of her own to give the Bison a 62-52 advantage just 18 seconds later. Kapp hit another jumper to hand Bucknell the 12-point lead heading into the final stanza.
As the Mountain Hawks and Bison continued to trade baskets to begin the fourth quarter and Lehigh got the deficit back down to single-digits with a three from junior Clair Steele with 4:01 left, but Bucknell's Kapp did what she does best, a 3-pointer on the next play to pump the lead back to 12.
Clougherty drilled her fourth 3-pointer of the afternoon with 1:22 left, but the Bison closed the outing with four more points to run away with the 80-66 win.
It was an historic day for senior Mary Clougherty, who hit the 100th 3-pointer of her career with 3:30 left to play in the second quarter, becoming just the 10th player in program history to achieve the milestone, passing former teammate and current assistant coach Bernadette Devaney for 10th all-time. Clougherty finished the game with a team-high 15 points and four 3-pointers. She has scored double-figures in five of her six games this season.
Two more Mountain Hawks scored in double figures with Mackenzie Kramer finishing with 12 points and Frannie Hottinger notching 10. Hottinger also grabbed nine rebounds on the day.
Sophomore Anna Harvey and senior Mariah Sexe each led the way with three assists each.
As a team, Lehigh shot 36.7 percent (22-for-60) from the field, 37.5 percent (9-for-24) from long distance and was just 68.4 percent (13-for-19) from the free throw line, well off its second-in-the-nation 84.0 percent clip heading into the game.
For Bucknell, while only completing five 3-pointers, the team still shot 35.7 percent (5-for-14) from downtown, but managed to convert on over half of its shots from the field at 51.5 percent (34-for-66). The Bison were perfect from the charity stripe, going 7-for-7 from the line.
The Bison out-rebounded the Mountain Hawks, 44-29 and scored 50 points in the paint to Lehigh's 22.
The lead changed twice, the score was tied on three occasions and the Mountain Hawks led for just 23 seconds at the very beginning of the second quarter.
Lehigh, now at .500 in division play, will take on north division foe Holy Cross for a pair of games next Saturday and Sunday, both at Stabler Arena. The Crusaders, who started the season 0-2, are 4-2 now following four straight victories.
Both games next weekend will be streamed live on ESPN+ with Matt Markus (PxP) and Matt Kerr (Color) on the call.
