BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Two Lehigh track and field student-athletes have been named All-Academic Athletes, while both the men's and women's teams earned All-Academic Team accolades, as announced by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) earlier in the week.
Overall, there were 199 different programs on the men's side honored, while there were 264 programs honored on the women's side.
"Lehigh Athletics is all about the student-athlete. I think we live in a day where so many administrations have forgotten the "student" portion of that descriptor," said head coach Matt Utesch. "This team award is a clear indicator that the Lehigh athletic department and the track and field program have our priorities in the right place. Our students have demonstrated once again the balance between high level athletics and world class academics is very attainable."
The women's team boasted a team-GPA of 3.68 in the spring semester, good enough for fifth among all Lehigh athletic programs, while the men's team tallied a 3.49 GPA
The USTFCCCA recognizes teams with an average cumulative GPA of at least a 3.0 among all student-athletes on the 2019-20 roster. For individual accolades, student-athletes must boast a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.25, have completed at least two semesters at their current institution and finish in the top 96 in any championship event or in the top 48 in any championship relay event during the 2019-20 indoor season.
For the second straight year, Joey Kelly and Kyle Sult were named All-Academic Athletes. Kelly, majoring in bioengineering, recorded 3.74 GPA. Sult tallied a 3.88 GPA while majoring in mechanical engineering. Both men were named to the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll all four years.
"Joey and Kyle represent the very best of so many of aspects of our program. They are team leaders both on the track and in the classroom. Look at their majors! Couple that with the podium climbs they have been asked to make and you can see real achievement. It is crushing to know they never got the chance to complete their careers with our program but they have built a solid foundation for the next crop of Mountain Hawks to build on." Utesch added.
Last month, both programs had a combined 106 student-athletes named to the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll. The women's team had a league-leading 66 honorees.
