BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Following a strong school year in the classroom, the Lehigh men's basketball team has received the Team Excellence Award by the National Association of Basketball Coaches, as announced this week. Teams with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher during the 2019-20 academic year are recognized. In addition, recently-graduated Jordan Cohen and David Roelke were also named to the NABC Honors Court, presented to juniors or seniors who own a cumulative grade point average of 3.2 or higher at the conclusion of the academic year.
The Mountain Hawks were one of just four Patriot League programs recognized with the team award (along with Boston University, Colgate and Loyola). The team eclipsed a 3.0 GPA in both semesters, including a 3.53 during the spring.
Meanwhile, in order to be named to the Honors Court, a student-athlete must meet a high standard of academic criteria. The qualifications are as follows:
1. Academically a junior or senior and a varsity player.
2. Cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.2 or higher at the conclusion of the 2019-20 academic year.
3. Students must have matriculated at least one year at their current institution.
4. Member of a NCAA Division I, II, III, or NAIA Division I or II institution with a NABC member coach.
Cohen and Roelke were both named to the Honors Court for a second straight season, with both owning a 3.68 GPA after their final collegiate semesters in finance and political science, respectively. Cohen was named to the Academic All-Patriot League team for a third straight season, becoming just the seventh three-time Academic All-Patriot League honoree in program history. He was also named CoSIDA Academic All-District for a second straight year, becoming Lehigh men's basketball's first-ever two-time honoree. In addition, Cohen garnered the team's Scholar-Athlete of the Year after each of his four seasons.
Lehigh's academic success also included a program-record 11 student-athletes named to the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll.
On the court, the Mountain Hawks never quit and finished the season 6-3 over their final nine games. It included wins over three of the four eventual Patriot League semifinal teams, as the future looks bright for Lehigh men's basketball.
