BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh women's golf team is headed west to open its spring season as the Mountain Hawks will open the 2020 portion of their schedule at the Battle at Boulder Creek, Monday-Tuesday at Boulder Creek Golf Club, in Boulder City, Nevada, near Las Vegas.
The Mountain Hawks will be one of four teams competing in the two-day, 54-hole event that will serve as the first of five spring tournaments for the Brown and White.
Lehigh is coming off a fall season in which it finished in the top half in three of its four tournaments. The Mountain Hawks opened the fall by finishing second out of 10 teams at the FDU Invitational and finished fourth in Bucknell's Fall Invitational and the Lehigh Invitational.
Senior Minuette Laessig led Lehigh by tying for third at FDU, while junior Angela Ding tied for third at the fall-ending Lehigh Invitational and earned Patriot League Golfer of the Week honors for her efforts. Laessig shot a career-best 70 in the second round at Bucknell, while Ding tied a career-low 74 on two occasions during the fall.
Laessig and Ding will occupy the top two spots in Lehigh's lineup at Boulder Creek. Freshman Hannah Foster will play in the No. 3 spot, senior Rebecca Markunas will play No. 4 and freshman Iris Shin will play No. 5. Freshman Marina Mendez will compete as an individual.
Lehigh will be joined by Ball State, Drake and Idaho State, while UNLV will send a contingent of individuals. Monday's opening day of competition will feature 36 holes with a shotgun start beginning at 7:15 a.m. local time. Tuesday's final round will also feature a shotgun start beginning at 7:15 a.m.
The Battle at Boulder Creek is expected to have live scoring on GolfStat.com.
In March, Lehigh will play in Butler's Benbow Invitational, March 9-10 in Jacksonville, Fla., over spring break and the Kingsmill Intercollegiate, hosted by William & Mary March 30-31.
April begins with Lehigh playing in the Intercollegiate at Prospect Bay, April 4-5 in Grasonville, Md. The spring season will conclude with the Patriot League Championship, April 18-19 in Lewisburg, Pa. The Mountain Hawks will be looking to win their first Patriot League title since 2013 on the same course where Lehigh won the inaugural Patriot League Championship.
