BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh men's track and field team will look to build off its successful win last Saturday against Lafayette. This weekend, the Mountain Hawks have two events in which multiple athletes will be at. First, the Brown and White will have athletes at the Bruce Lehane/Scarlet & White from Boston University, while others will compete at the Villanova Invitational at Ocean Breeze in Staten Island.
Last time out, the Mountain Hawks and the Leopards of Lafayette squared off in another installment of The Rivalry. Thanks to some clutch performances from freshmen, Lehigh escaped the Rauch Fieldhouse with a win, 99-79. 15 members of the Brown and White notched personal PRs against Lafayette.
Newcomer Zach DeLone continued his incredible start to the season, winning two more events in the 60m (7.06) and the 200m (22.28). Freshman Brandtson Duffie came through for Lehigh with a first-place finish in the 800m (1:56.73). Kyle Burke and Seth Slavin also notched wins for Lehigh. Senior pole vaulter Joey Kelly returned to the win column at 4.80m (15'9").
"It's definitely a stepping stone for us. It was our seventh straight win against our rival," claimed head coach Matt Utesch. "We still have to work on a few things though. We have these hiccups occasionally and for whatever reason we offered hope to Lafayette. We got the win though. That's all that matters! Our guys battled, competed and brought the energy needed for this rivalry."
Coach Utesch also mentioned how his team has to try and take every opportunity they can. Well, his team will have plenty of chances this weekend with Lehigh competing in two events.
Traveling to Ocean Breeze for the Villanova Invitational will be DeLone, Evan El-Halawani, Michael Nardelli, Joey Kelly, Samuel Tapera and Bartlomiej Bancewicz. Competing at Boston will be the distance runners for the men. This group will be led by Slavin, Jeffrey Kirshenbaum, Kyle Burke, Brad DeMassa, Nick Crociata and Duffie. The event in Boston will start at 1:30 p.m., while the Villanova Invitational at Ocean Breeze will start at 4:00 p.m.
"Winning builds so much confidence. Once our guys start rattling off wins, it will give them more confidence. Our guys will be ready." concluded Utesch.
Up next, the Mountain Hawks will return to Ocean Breeze on Friday, Feb. 7. This time, the University at Albany will be hosting an event.
