BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh men's track and field team will look for its seventh straight win against Lafayette on Saturday inside Rauch Fieldhouse. The Mountain Hawks and Leopards are set to clash at 2:00 p.m.
Last time out, Lehigh had athletes competing in two separate events. In the morning, a small number of athletes represented the Brown and White at the Moravian Indoor Invitational, while the rest of the team competed at Ocean Breeze in Staten Island at the UPenn Select.
At the end of last Saturday, 12 student-athletes broke personal PRs on the men's side. From the Moravian Indoor Invitational, Vincent Polignano and Bartlomiej Bancewicz were the bright spots. Polignano finished fourth in the high jump at 1.83m, while Banzewicz used a late surge to finish fifth in the 800m. In Staten Island, freshman Zach Delone dazzled and Anastasios Mouzakis powered his way in the weight throw. Sean Brown captured an eighth-place finish in the 800m with a time of 1:54.23, followed by Christian O'Neal's ninth-place finish in the high jump.
The Patriot League noticed DeLone's performance from last weekend because they awarded the freshman Rookie of the Week honors. The Downingtown native captured two PRs in the 60m (6.96) and the 200m (21.99).
"Here's what I learned from last Saturday. Lehigh has some sprinters now," head coach Matt Utesch said with a smile. "It's kind of a new thing for us. Zach, Samuel Tapera and Drew Roman are all a joy to watch and coach."
Coming into Saturday's date with Lafayette, the Mountain Hawks know what's at stake. All week long, practices have been ramped up and the athletes are ready to go out and put on a show inside Rauch on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
"This group gets it," said Utesch. "Certainly, there is nothing I can tell them. It's going to be their teammates telling them. This is a big meet for us! Everybody has a different attitude this week. They're pushing each other a little harder and the intensity is getting ramped up."
"Joey Kelly is a guy to watch on Saturday. He's had a rough past two weeks, but we have been working with him and we're confident he's ready to get back to being one of the best. Freshman Louis Logsdail is returning for us. I expect us to be one-two in the pole vault. In the distance, guys like Sean Brown, Jeffrey Kirshenbaum and Matt Kravitz, they're going to bring it! We have some exceptional competitors.
Last year, Lehigh defeated Lafayette, 100-81. Of the 22 events that took place, the Brown and White managed to win 16 of them.
