Lehigh drops second straight road contest, 2-1 vs. Bryant

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Lehigh field hockey team opened the scoring in the third quarter, but Bryant had an answer, scoring the game's final two goals to down the Mountain Hawks 2-1 on Sunday afternoon. Junior Lenke Havas put home a goal late in the third quarter, but for a second straight day, the Mountain Hawks allowed a quick goal after scoring themselves. Freshman Maddie Kahn made seven saves in goal to backbone the defense, including a number of strong stops.
"We're obviously very disappointed with the results today and this weekend," said Lehigh associate head coach Taylor Dyer. "The season got off to a great start and unfortunately, our results this weekend are setting us back a little bit, which is disappointing. But we are excited to get back to work because we have a lot of games left and a tough road ahead, but I believe this team is up for making the adjustments to bounce back."
The first half saw the Mountain Hawks hold a 7-6 edge in shots, five coming in the final 7:12 of the stanza. Lehigh increased the offensive pressure as the half progressed, which included a dangerous shot by junior Drew Pecora in the 27th minute which went just wide. Lehigh generated four penalty corners in the final stages of the second quarter, but were unable to put any on goal.
On the other end, Kahn was only tested three times, but on two of them, she made quick stops off penalty corners.
A few minutes into the third quarter, the Mountain Hawks began a stretch of relentless pressure, creating six penalty corners in just 7:43 of game action. Lehigh turned one of them into the game's first goal as Havas fired towards goal, where the ball was redirected by a defender's stick into the back of the cage at the 40:11 mark. Pecora was credited with an assist on the play, her fifth straight game with a point to up her season total to 19 (eight goals, three assists).
The lead only lasted 1:40, however, as the Bulldogs fired a shot from the top of the circle past Kahn, evening the score at 41:51.
After freshman Sarah Bonthuis had a strong chance early in the fourth quarter, Bryant answered with four consecutive shots, the fourth beating Kahn off a penalty corner. The Bulldogs' initial shot was blocked, but Taryn Rauff collected right in front of Kahn and gave her team a 2-1 advantage.
Lehigh again wouldn't go down quietly, tallying the game's final six shots and three corners looking to pull even, but couldn't put home the equalizer.
Final shots were 21-19 in favor of Lehigh while the Mountain Hawks held a 12-6 edge in penalty corners. Kahn's seven saves came across Marijn Jaarsma, who also had seven.
The Mountain Hawks return to action next weekend when they host American on Saturday (11 a.m.) and Long Island on Sunday (12 p.m.).
