BETHLEHEM, Pa. — The Lehigh men's soccer team concludes its three-game road swing on Tuesday evening when the Mountain Hawks head to Philadelphia to take on Penn at Rhodes Field. Lehigh is coming off an all-important 2-1 victory over American on Saturday in the Patriot League opener, one of just three teams in the league to earn a win in the opening weekend.
The Mountain Hawks scored goals in the 16th and 50th minutes off the feet of Michael Tahiru and Natan Rosen, respectively. Both goals for the first of the careers for both players. Andrew White and Trevor Koski provided assists during the game, with Koski having a hand in both goals. Senior goalkeeper allowed a late goal in the win, but made three saves and helped keep the advantage at one in the closing seconds following a flurry of activity near the net.
Sophomore forward Josh Luchini remains Lehigh's top goal scorer with four goals in six games this season, seeing his four game goal streak being snapped on Saturday. Luchini also leads the way in points (8), shots (14) and shots on goal (9). Koski's two assists on the day Saturday drove his season total to three so far along with two goals for seven points, while Rosen now has a goal and an assist on 13 shots during his rookie campaign so far. Smith and the Lehigh defense have both done an excellent job of limiting its opponent's chances this season with three shutouts and a goals allowed average of 0.83 through the first six games of the year. The Mountain Hawks are averaging 1.33 goals per game this season on 12.8 shots per contest.
Penn comes into Tuesday's matchup following a gritty 1-0 victory over Temple and a 1-1 tie with No. 24 Rutgers last Tuesday. The Quakers are 3-1-1 through their first five games on the year. Joey Bhangdia leads the way with three goals for six points on the year while registering a team-high 16 shots, seven of which have been on goal. Two of Bhangdia's goals have been game-winners for the Quakers this season. Both Alex Touche and Kai Lammers have scored a goal for Penn in addition. Between the pipes, Dane Jacomen has been excellent, allowing just two goals in five games with a goals against average of 0.38. All three of Penn's wins this season have been shutouts. The Quakers are averaging 1.00 goals per game this season and 10.2 shots per game. 22 of their 51 shots have been labeled shots on goal this year so far.
Lehigh played Penn to a scoreless draw last year at the Ulrich Sports Complex, one of the Mountain Hawks' two ties on the season. Three of the last four matchups between the two teams have ended as ties, with the all-time record currently in the Quakers' favor, 19-34-7. The last time Lehigh had a win against Penn was at Rhodes Field on Sept. 14, 2017, where the Mountain Hawks picked up a 3-0 shutout victory.
Tuesday's game will be streamed live on ESPN+, with coverage beginning at 7 p.m. This matchup precedes Lehigh's second Patriot League contest of the season Saturday at the Ulrich Sports Complex against Boston University.
