Smith tabbed as Patriot League Player of the Week

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – As the Lehigh softball team preps for the upcoming Patriot League Tournament, junior Mary-Hannah Smith claimed the final Patriot League Player of the Week award for the regular season on Tuesday. Smith went 5-for-10 at the plate and drove in five runs as the Mountain Hawks closed out the regular season with a three-game sweep at Colgate, clinching a Patriot League Tournament berth and locking up the No. 3 seed in the process.
Smith contributed multiple hits or multiple RBIs in all three games in Hamilton, N.Y.
In Saturday's series opener, Smith opened the scoring for Lehigh with a third-inning RBI double, the second of four Mountain Hawk doubles in what became a four-run inning as Lehigh went on to claim a 6-2 victory.
Smith had two hits in game one Saturday and added two more in game two. She came to the plate with the bases loaded in the top of the seventh, with Lehigh down 1-0 and singled to right field, bringing home the tying and go-ahead runs as the Mountain Hawks rallied for a 3-1 win.
In Sunday's regular season finale, Smith capped a seven-run top of the first inning with a sacrifice fly and later added a RBI double in the fifth inning that put Lehigh up 8-1.
This is the first Player of the Week award for Smith who was recognized twice as Rookie of the Week as a freshman in 2017.
The Mobile, Ala., native enters the postseason hitting .353 with 14 doubles, two home runs and 26 RBIs. Smith leads Lehigh with 59 hits and has drawn a team-best 15 walks. She was especially tough during Patriot League play, batting .373 with eight doubles and six RBIs in 59 at-bats.
Lehigh (25-26, 11-7 PL) enters the Patriot League Tournament as the No. 3 seed and will play No. 2 Bucknell Thursday in an opening round game at the BU Softball Field in Boston. Game time is set for 2:30 p.m. with video coverage on the Patriot League Network.
