Mountain Hawks clinch PLT berth with doubleheader sweep at Colgate

HAMILTON, N.Y. – Needing just one win to lock up a Patriot League Tournament berth, the Lehigh softball team got that win in game one of a doubleheader Saturday at Colgate. The Mountain Hawks hit four doubles in a four-run third inning and won the game 6-2 at Eaton Street Field to ensure they would be in the Patriot League postseason for the 29th straight year.
Lehigh trailed 1-0 heading into the seventh inning of game two but a two-run single by junior Mary-Hannah Smith helped the Mountain Hawks rally for a 3-1 win to sweep the twin bill.
With Saturday's sweep, Lehigh moves to 24-26 overall and 10-7 in the Patriot League. The Mountain Hawks have clinched the No. 3 in next week's Patriot League Tournament.
Smith, junior Lexi van Ooyen and freshman Carley Barjaktarovich all had two hits in game one.
Junior Reva Alderman led off the third inning with a double and two batters later Smith doubled her home, to give Lehigh a 1-0 lead. Freshman Jaelynn Chesson followed with a double to left center scoring Smith. With two outs, Barjaktarovich delivered Lehigh's fourth double of the inning, plating two runs to give the Mountain Hawks a 4-0 advantage.
Lehigh extended its lead with two outs in the fifth as sophomore Lainey Stephenson delivered a pinch hit two-run single up the middle to put the Mountain Hawks up 6-0.
Colgate scored its only two runs of game one on Morgan Farrah's two-run double in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Senior Emily Sorem came on in relief of freshman Gabriella Nori to get Lehigh out of the fifth and then pitched two more hitless innings to close out the victory.
Nori allowed two runs on seven hits over 4.2 innings with two walks and three strikeouts to earn her eighth victory of the season.
In game two, the Mountain Hawks left six runners on base over the first six innings, while junior Parker Boyd allowed just one Colgate hit, a two-out home run by Mia Guevarra in the first inning.
Alderman started Lehigh's three-run seventh-inning rally with a leadoff single. A fielder's choice, a walk and an infield single loaded the bases with one out for Smith, who lined a single into right field, scoring two runs to put Lehigh in front. Chesson brought home a third run with a fielder's choice as Lehigh took a 3-1 lead into the seventh.
Colgate (25-25, 8-9 PL) put the tying runs on base in the seventh, but Boyd struck out Jordan Miller to end the game.
Boyd picked up her 12th win of the season, allowing a run on two hits with two walks and five strikeouts.
Smith was 2-for-3 in game two, while senior Ashley Rabago was 3-for-4.
Lehigh and Colgate will close out their series and the regular season with a single game Sunday at noon. Both teams are locked into their Patriot League Tournament seeds. Bucknell and Boston University will play Sunday for the right to host the Patriot League Tournament beginning Thursday.
