One win gets Lehigh in as Mountain Hawks close out regular season at Colgate

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Entering the final series of the regular season, the recipe is simple for the Lehigh softball team. If the Mountain Hawks want to make the Patriot League Tournament for the 29th consecutive season, they must win once in their final three games.

Lehigh heads to Hamilton, N.Y. to battle Colgate with the two teams currently tied for third place in the league standings at 8-7. The Raiders have already clinched a spot in the tournament because should Lehigh sweep the three-game series, Colgate still holds the tiebreaker over fifth-place Army West Point. The Mountain Hawks do not have that luxury as the Black Knights control the tiebreaker should Lehigh get swept.

The Mountain Hawks and Raiders will play a doubleheader Saturday at Eaton Street Field, followed by a single game Sunday to close out the regular season. Start times both days are set for noon, with Colgate planning to stream the entire series on the Patriot League Network.

Lehigh (22-26) saw its four-game winning streak come to an end with a late 5-2 loss to Villanova on Wednesday. Sophomore Payton Alsobrooks gave Lehigh the lead with a seventh-inning RBI double but Villanova scored four in the bottom of the seventh, capped by a Paige Rauch three-run walk-off home run.

Senior Ashley Rabago went 3-for-4 with Lehigh's other run scored against the Wildcats. She is hitting .455 (20-for-44) with 13 runs scored since returning to Lehigh's starting lineup against Army.

Freshman Jaelynn Chesson took a rare 0-for-4 at Villanova but remains Lehigh's leader in nearly all offensive categories.

In its last league outing Lehigh swept a three-game series at Holy Cross with the three games decided by a total of five runs. While junior Parker Boyd and freshman Gabriella Nori have handled the brunt of the work in the pitcher's circle this season it was senior Emily Sorem who stepped up, nailing down two wins in Worcester including a nine-inning no-hitter in last Saturday's second game.

A seven-game winning streak has moved Colgate over .500 on the season to 25-22. The streak includes the final two games of a series with Holy Cross and last weekend's three-game sweep of Lafayette.

Colgate is led offensively by Meghan Romero, who is hitting .345 with three home runs and 25 RBIs. Patriot League Player of the Week Virginia Irby is next at .333 with five home runs and 23 RBIs.

Bella Crow has been Colgate's top pitcher, going 11-10 with a 3.42 ERA over 127 innings, while Kaitlyn Borruso won the league's Rookie of the Week award, going 2-0 with a save and a 0.49 ERA over 14.1 innings of work last week.

The Mountain Hawks hold an 80-27 lead in the all-time series and has won two of three in each of the last two seasons.

Lehigh has played in all 28 previous Patriot League Tournaments, including the last 21 which only featured the top four in the league standings. The Mountain Hawks are the only Patriot League team never to miss the postseason and will need one win this weekend to continue the streak.
