Lehigh closes out regular season with 11-1 win at Colgate

5/5/2019 2:40:00 PM | Softball

HAMILTON, N.Y. – Lehigh's bats came alive in its regular season finale as the Mountain Hawks pounded out 13 hits in an 11-1, five-inning win at Colgate Sunday at Eaton Street Field. The Mountain Hawks started fast, scoring seven runs in the top of the first and added four in the fifth to complete the three-game sweep of the Raiders.

Freshmen Jaelynn Chesson and Addie Kittel both hit home runs as Lehigh finishes the regular season at 25-26 overall and 11-7 in the league. The Mountain Hawks are locked in as the No. 3 seed in the Patriot League Tournament, while Colgate (25-25, 8-10 PL) will be the No. 4 seed.

Senior Ashley Rabago led off the game with a single up the middle and two batters later Chesson clubbed her fifth home run of the season out to right center to give Lehigh a 2-0 lead. The next three Mountain Hawks reached base before junior Reva Alderman cleared the bases with a three-run double down the left field line. A single by senior Jennifer Stoll scored Alderman to put Lehigh up 6-0 and junior Mary-Hannah Smith capped the seven-run frame with a sacrifice fly to right.

Colgate opened the third inning with back-to-back hits off senior Emily Sorem and got on the board on a Virginia Irby RBI ground out.

Lehigh put the game out of reach with a four-run fifth inning. The Mountain Hawks got back-to-back two out hits from Stoll and Rabago before Smith doubled to left field to put Lehigh up 8-1. Kittel then crushed the first pitch she saw from Kaitlyn Borruso out to left field for a three-run home run that put Lehigh up by 10. The home run was Kittel's second of the season.

Freshman Gabriella Nori worked around a one out single in the home fifth to close out Lehigh's third consecutive win.

Sorem earned her fifth win of the season allowing a run on two hits over three innings with a pair of strikeouts. Nori struck out two and allowed one hit over two scoreless frames of relief.

Rabago, Stoll and junior Lexi van Ooyen all had two hits to lead Lehigh's offense.

The Patriot League Tournament begins Thursday on the home field of the highest seed. Boston University and Bucknell are scheduled to play Sunday in Lewisburg, Pa., with the winner earning the right to host.
