BETHLEHEM, Pa. – After 10 consecutive games at Leadership Park, Lehigh takes to the road Wednesday, making the short trip to Lawrenceville, N.J. to face Rider for a doubleheader. Game one is set for a 2:30 p.m. start from Herb and Joan Young Field.
Lehigh snapped a five-game Patriot League slide with a 1-0 victory over Boston University in Sunday's series finale. Junior Parker Boyd fired a one-hit shutout against the defending Patriot League champs, while classmate Lexi van Ooyen singled off Patriot League Pitcher of the Year Ali DuBois to bring home the only run of the game.
The Mountain Hawks enter Wednesday's game at 12-21 after going 3-7 on the home stand. Four of the seven losses were by two runs or less. Junior Mary-Hannah Smith and freshmen Jaelynn Chesson and Addie Kittel all had six hits over five games last week to lead Lehigh. Kittel had three RBIs in a doubleheader split with Saint Joseph's last Wednesday. Chesson had four doubles in that same twin bill. She leads the Mountain Hawks with a .404 average and 16 RBIs.
Boyd went 2-1 last week with a 0.95 ERA, picking up both of Lehigh's wins last week. She has lowered her ERA to 3.14 while improving to 7-8 on the season. Boyd has 92 strikeouts, while freshman Gabriella Nori has 81. The duo has combined to throw 176.1 of Lehigh's 210 innings in the circle this season.
Rider enters Wednesday's doubleheader at 5-27. The Broncs went 2-4 last week with wins in their first game of the week at Princeton and their last, at home against Monmouth.
The Broncs are hitting just .215 as a team, led by Sam Ward, who is hitting .318 with two home runs and 10 RBIs in 44 at-bats. Among regulars, Kelsey Marigliano is hitting .273 with 24 hits and 14 runs.
Brooklyn Trujillo leads a five-pitcher staff with a 3-9 record and 6.72 ERA.
Lehigh head coach Fran Troyan will encounter a pair of familiar faces on the home side. Former Lehigh infielder Davon Ortega '02 is in her second season as head coach, while All-Patriot League and All-Region outfielder Shana Treon '04 is Ortega's top assistant.
Rider leads the all-time series 33-20, but Lehigh has won six straight in the series. The Mountain Hawks swept a doubleheader last May at Leadership Park, winning 2-0 and 9-2. Lehigh last visited Lawrenceville in 2014, sweeping a doubleheader 6-0 and 10-4.
Wednesday's doubleheader will be streamed on ESPN3.
Following Wednesday's twin bill, Lehigh will return to Leadership Park this weekend to host Army West Point for three games Saturday and Sunday. The series will begin with a doubleheader Saturday at noon and will be followed by a single game Sunday at noon on Lehigh's senior day.
