Mountain Hawks sweep Wednesday twin bill at Rider

4/10/2019 8:14:00 PM | Softball

LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. – Lehigh got a pair of strong pitching performances and capitalized on a number of Rider mistakes in a doubleheader sweep Wednesday afternoon at Herb and Joan Young Field. The Mountain Hawks rode a six-run second inning to a 9-0, five-inning win in game one, then scored two runs on an error to win game two 2-1.

With Wednesday's sweep, Lehigh has now won three straight games as the Mountain Hawks improve to 14-21 on the season.

The Mountain Hawks totaled 20 hits in the twin bill, led by junior Mary-Hannah Smith and freshman Carley Barjaktarovich, who both had three. Freshman Jaelynn Chesson had two hits and two RBI in game one.

Junior Hannah Edwards led off the top of the first with a bunt single and after moving to second on a ground out and taking third on a passed ball, scored on a Chesson ground out to give Lehigh an early 1-0 lead.

In the second, Lehigh produced six runs on seven hits and was helped by two Bronc errors. Junior Lexi van Ooyen led off with a single and came around to score on a passed ball. Barjaktarovich, junior Emily Preble, Smith, Chesson and freshman Addie Kittel all had RBI hits in the frame, with Chesson's being a double.

Lehigh added single runs in the fourth and fifth innings to go up 9-0. Sophomore Allyson Dibsie and junior Reva Alderman opened the fourth with back-to-back doubles, while Barjaktarovich led off the fifth with a single and scored on an Edwards ground out.

Junior Parker Boyd allowed five hits in the pitcher's circle but posted her second consecutive shutout to even her season record at 8-8. Boyd struck out six and did not walk a batter.

Lehigh's only runs in game two came in the fourth inning. Van Ooyen led off with a double and two batters later freshman Karsen O'Rourke reached on a fielder's choice. With two on and two out, Dibsie reached on a Grace Stansfield error, allowing both runs to score.

Freshman Gabriella Nori allowed just a bunt single through the first 6.2 innings. Elyse Cuttic put Rider (5-29) on the board with a solo home run in the seventh. Lani Moreno followed with a single for the Broncs, but Nori got Rachael Zeides to ground out to end the game. Nori struck out five and allowed just the one run on three hits as she improves to 5-10. Lehigh pitchers did not walk a batter over 12 innings Wednesday.

Sophomore Payton Alsobrooks had two doubles in game two, while Smith was 2-for-3 with a walk.

The Mountain Hawks will return home to host Army West Point in a three-game series this weekend at Leadership Park. A doubleheader is set for Saturday at noon, with a single game to follow Sunday at noon. Lehigh will recognize its senior class prior to Sunday's game.
