Lehigh hosts Army West Point in final league home series, Senior Day set for Sunday

4/11/2019 8:01:00 PM | Softball

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Believe it or not, Lehigh will host its final Patriot League regular season series this weekend as the Mountain Hawks welcome the Black Knights of Army West Point for three games. Lehigh and Army will play a doubleheader Saturday beginning at noon, and a single game Sunday also slated for a noon start.

The Mountain Hawks will recognize their three member senior class of Ashley Rabago, Emily Sorem and Jennifer Stoll prior to Sunday's series finale.

Both Lehigh and Army come in with 4-5 Patriot League records, which have them tied for fourth place after three weekend of league play. The Mountain Hawks have yet to leave the Lehigh Valley during the Patriot League season, opening league play with three wins at Lafayette before hosting Bucknell and Boston University the last two weekends. Lehigh will be off from league play next weekend before closing out the Patriot League season on the road at Holy Cross and Colgate over the final two weekends.

Lehigh has won its last three games overall to move to 14-21. The Mountain Hawks won the series final from Boston University last Sunday 1-0 and then swept a doubleheader at Rider on Wednesday, winning game one 9-0 in five innings, and game two 2-1.

The Mountain Hawks got strong pitching performances at Rider as junior Parker Boyd threw a five-inning five-hitter for her second straight shutout and freshman Gabriella Nori followed by allowing one hit through 6.2 innings in game two.

Offensively, Lehigh capitalized on Rider miscues in both games. Junior Mary-Hannah Smith and freshman Carley Barjaktarovich each had three hits in Wednesday's doubleheader, while freshman Jaelynn Chesson had two hits and drove in two runs in game one.

Chesson leads Lehigh with a .400 batting average and now has a team-best 18 RBIs on the season.

Boyd has now lowered her season ERA to 2.99 after throwing 12 consecutive shutout innings in her last two starts.

Army West Point is 18-23 on the season. The Black Knights split a non-league doubleheader against Marist on Wednesday. In league play, Army has taken two of three from both Holy Cross and Lafayette, but is coming off a home sweep at the hands of Colgate last weekend.

Grace Mattimore has a team-best five home runs and is hitting .424 in just 33 at-bats, while Ally Snelling has a .308 average and leads the Black Knights with 27 RBIs.

In the pitcher's circle, Renee Poirier, Macey Newbary and Jolie Duong have all thrown more than 45 innings and have shared the load, relatively speaking during league play. Poirier leads with a 2.01 ERA, while Duong leads in wins (eight) and strikeouts (71).

Lehigh leads the all-time series 91-37 but the Mountain Hawks and Black Knights have a long history of tightly-contested battles, especially in the Patriot League Tournament. The Mountain Hawks went 3-1 against the Black Knights last season with Parker Boyd throwing complete game shutouts in all three Lehigh victories. Boyd threw a one-hitter and a six-hitter during a regular season series win at West Point, then threw a three-hitter to eliminate Army from the Patriot League Tournament.

Following the Army series, Lehigh will travel to Princeton for a doubleheader on Wednesday before returning home to host Stony Brook on Saturday April 20. The Mountain Hawks' next Patriot League series will be at Holy Cross April 27-28.
