BETHLEHEM, Pa. – For the third straight game Lehigh and Boston University engaged in a pitcher's duel and on Sunday it was junior Parker Boyd firing a one-hit shutout to outduel Ali DuBois as the Mountain Hawks won the final game of the three-game set 1-0 at Leadership Park.
Junior Lexi van Ooyen drove in the only run of the game with a second inning pinch hit single, plating a run that was unearned. Freshman Addie Kittel had Lehigh's other two hits as the Mountain Hawks improve to 12-21 overall and 4-5 in the Patriot League.
"Parker pitched a great game for us," Lehigh head coach Fran Troyan said. "She threw so many pitches yesterday, so we wanted her to be more concerted in her effort. We wanted her to get ahead in the count and get outs instead of maybe strikeouts. She did a great job with the game plan today and pitched incredibly well."
Boyd allowed just a leadoff single to AJ Huerta-Leipner in the first, but dealt with base runners in four of the seven innings because of four walks.
The Mountain Hawks brought home the only run of the game and their only run of the series in the bottom of the second inning. Kittel singled to left center with one out and then sophomore Payton Alsobrooks reached on a DuBois throwing error. Two batters later, Troyan called on van Ooyen to bat for freshman Melissa Fedorka and van Ooyen dunked a single into shallow left field, allowing pinch runner Lainey Stephenson to score from second.
Boyd retired eight Terriers in a row following a two out walk in the third but then ran into trouble in the sixth when a walk and an error put runners on second and third with two outs, but Boyd got Marina Sylvestri to line out to second base to end the inning. She set Boston University down in order in the seventh to close out her seventh win of the season and her first complete game shutout. Boyd struck out four in her third career one-hitter.
"We had an opportunity where the game could've gotten away from us but Parker bore down and did a great job," Troyan said. "We kept our composure there, which was really a good thing."
Lehigh's victory snapped a five-game Patriot League losing streak, the program's longest since 1991, while also snapping BU's seven game overall winning streak and handing the Terriers their first league loss. BU is now 20-16 overall and 5-1 in league action.
"We are still in the process of improving," Troyan said. "It has taken us a bit longer to get to where we want to get, but I feel like progressively got better throughout the weekend, which is something we can build on."
The Mountain Hawks will travel to Rider for a Wednesday doubleheader, with game one set to begin at 3 p.m. from Lawrenceville, N.J. Lehigh will host its final Patriot League series next weekend when Army West Point visits for three games April 13-14.

It was big for us to have some depth on the bench to be able to come through in those situations."Lexi van Ooyen with the pinch-hit RBI single to give Lehigh a 1-0 lead after two innings.
